Bike test

calm down clam down and have a stiff drink boys

Hysteria has broken out on this here forum!

eg the Pan 1300 ... :thumb2

I can't remember a single journo reporting a headshake during a test on a pan 1300, let alone three during the first test.

Whether there's an actual issue with the bike or not, this has the potential to be quite serious for bmw.

Thought the geometry was exactly the same as the old model, can't imagine an extra
15hp would change a stable platform into a unstable one.

It's not the same though, is it ! -
Although the wheel base is the same - the swinging arm is longer & it's got a full frame which won't flex as much.

Should make the ride quite different I think

I think you are right on the power issue. however, the incidence of the head shake over the launch seems to me to be quite high in terms of the number of riders. I can't remember a press launch where i have seen such a consistent issue and the Bike experience looks positively frightening.

I am not in the fortunate position of being able to afford a new LC however, I have to say that had I been I would be holding off for 6 months or so to see what happens.

Given the amount of testing I would be surprised if there is an issue BUT ..I don't need a new bike that much and as riding a bike has an element of risk about it I am not sure I would want to take the chance.

Which is why I'd like to see how this gets on in the real world next week.:thumb The bikes could have been set up wrong (after all, how many combinations of settings are there:blagblah), or all journo's had the issue on exactly the same stretch of road etc, the proof will be how the bike fares after launch.:rob I'm still struggling to believe that after all the R&D, that a company like BMW would drop such a clanger.:nenau

I am not going to spend my £13815 on a badly designed bike which is going to kill me when I happen to hit a pothole.
Ive retrieved my envelope of postal orders (you have got to buy several to get to the exact amount) from Motorradd Kirkcaldy, and clutching the aforementioned package in both hands for fiscal safety, rode my 1150 adventure through the snow, using my knees and upper body weight to steer me stabily to my local Vauxhall dealer and slammed it on the laminate veneered desk in the corner and demanded delivery of a 2013 Meriva, £13290 with free insurance and optional alloy-look trims.

... and used the change to treat my presently, fully alive wife to a slap-up, sit down kebab, breaking it gently to her that, despite what the neighbours might say about still having a seven year old bike and bringing down the tone of the mostly private owned housing estate, I was not going to risk either hers or my life on a devil machine which has already killed one, and severely injured several others.

It will have to wait.. I told her emphatically. I'm a man, and the foot has been firmly put down and wont be moved.

Anybody want to buy my cherished reg .. LC12DEN, £1500

Here, here! :clap

Den - we know who you are referring to when you say, one person "killed" but who are/were the seriously injured ones?

Good luck with the Meriva.....!

I think that's a bit naive - the journo's are probably some of the most experienced riders out there, who do it everyday for a job

They push bikes to the limits

For 5-6 mags to report the same issue all over the northern hemisphere is significant

I bet they'll fit a steering damper like the R11R's had

Wire Wheels Perhaps?

Question - did all the SA test bikes have wire wheels and some had knobblies fitted and if so could it be their greater gyroscopic effect is the culprit ?

In the development phase BMW would have tested on the cast wheel as this is the all new component, i think the wire only has new hubs.

Whatever the cause its very worrying. Don't think I'm under contract to collect bike on a certain day despite it being available on the 2nd so i may delay and hang on to my 14k whilst BMW explain the events in SA or fit the steering damper!

I've have ordered cast wheels BTW.

Wise move

Good find Jonnyp

Now that is very interesting.

i assume switching ignition off/on would reset mode to default but it seems these Canadians officials are getting lots of time in testing and double checking the LC wonder why there digging so deep? It's not the sort of thing you would expect them to find easily is it?

Have our ministry boffs been beavering away around the clock? Think not.

Early days yet but a collective thank you to our candianian cousins many be required by all us soon to be beta testers!

So the second recall only affects bikes with the Enduro Pro plug in activated. Which is what the bikes in SA had. Looks like that is the answer then:nenau
