Bike test

The bit that has got me so riled by this thread is the amount people that seem to be intent on looking for failings in a bike they haven't even ridden. With seemingly no other goal than striking fear in to anyone brave enough to want to buy one.

Don't get me wrong, if there is a real problem, particularly if it's a risk to someone's life, it needs to be rectified, and pronto. But we really have very little to say that it is... and while many of you are comparing it to previous issues, none of those were life threatening. People dying is whole other level of pressure on BMW - so do you really think if there was any serious risk of this, it wouldn't be getting a bucket load of attention??

Meanwhile, you scaremongerers are severely limiting the enjoyment of people who want to buy one of these bikes. If they proceed, they're going to watch every pothole and wonder if this is going to be the one that cause the tankslapper from hell. It took me 10,000 miles to stop me 'looking' for vibes from the the FD on my 12GSA, all because we have so many people who want to make a drama out of something. And frequently people who don't even ride the particular model and have no first hand experience of the issue. (And for the record - my GSA now has over 70,000 hard miles on it, and it's still on the original FD.)

So all I'm asking is lay off the panic, particularly if a) you don't have all the information and b) it's not actually going to affect you. And hopefully, some people will get to focus on enjoying their new toy :thumb2

Oh, and here's some footage of a guy giving a new 12 some stick. I think he got confused and thought he was riding a KTM :D

ok you bunch of lightweights as i posted last week my plan was to let someone take the new bike hit, vat ect and let you fit a few tasteful extras and run the bike in for me. but in light of recent events and having slept on it, if any of you feel this DEATHTRAP is beyond you i will take it off your hands 10K firm, or 3K and my safe 08 1200gs(safe model).this is your chance to get out now, with no loss of face
having owned many "tankslapper bikes" h2 kawasaki, gt750 and maybe the worse one of all a cb900f2b i feel up to this challange of owning/riding and taming what will surely become bmw's new widowmaker.
i suspect the nutty gser had no sleep last night and woke in a cold sweat...
remember there is away out, i am here to help.

I'm having no problem sleeping old chap, and am counting down the days of the new bike arriving.:thumb I think the people that have read the threads on here and cancelled their orders as a result need a reality check with themselves.:comfort

As reported on here many times: outside lane motorway, cars up arse, fuel pump stops pumping.

Quite a few people on here had arse nipping moments in various scenarios due to these "non life threatening issues" that BMW ignored.

I know a very very nice man who can

What a very very nice man :bow
This truly is a wonderful forum, full of willing, helpful, polite, nice people :aidan

When I have my first tank slapper after riding one-handed through a pothole or riding like a total dick off-road, I know who to contact ;)

(at least the guy who did the Ride Magazine report admitted to riding with one hand when the incident occurred - good on him!)

PM to Stuart - I will need my seats back please

Totally agree, if I had a bike ordered I certainly wouldn't be cancelling it:blast
I think it's something BMW need to address sooner rather than later, but don't believe it's a deal breaker, for me at least.
I'm very envious of all you tossers collecting your bikes this weekend:green gri

And that's the reason I'm taking mine to Andalucia via Santander, some awesome roads over there,................. Bring it on .............:JB
:flag

I admire your confidence in motor manufacturers coming clean when there may be problems with their products.

Respect for your destination though - the wife and I rented an apartment and a TC GS for 10 days and it was the best biking holiday.

The Ronda road was brilliant - and there are so many more great roads.

ive calmed down and listened to you lot, so im collecting!:D i was thinkin of all the shite id get from my mates just like i got when i bought my TL1000!
:beerjug:

Tank Slapping

I bought a new GS last year and have done about 4000 miles. No complaints except for oil consumption 2 and 1/3 litres in say 3500. I have a new LC on order but I am having grave reservations re the Tank Slapping issue. Especially Martin Fitz-Gibons comments in bike. Magazines don't normally stick their necks too far out, so their comments are a concern. Would welcome some feedback. On the oil consumption I have gleaned from various posts/threads that some use oil some don't. It may run in eventually, but as I am 65 and back on a bike 18months ago, after an absence of 38 years, suspect I won't live long enough to witness this. I do however hope to last hopefully, another 15 years or so.

Cancel your order, and don't think about it any more:comfort:D

Hope I'm still riding at 65..!

That oil consumption sounds like my old GS, it used oil 'till around 10k and then setteled down to about 1/2 a litre between services.

Keep the LC on order and watch this site over the next few weeks....
