Bike won't start?

Went out this morning and bike wouldn't turn over. Assumed it was battery. Plugged in my charger which read that it was at zero so left it for the day charging. Just back from work and charger says it's full. Bike still won't do anything. Just making a clicking sound. Any ideas?

Could be that alright Michael, but you'd get that clicking sound if the battery was dead and hadn't enough juice to power the starter.

Can you get your hands on a battery meter at all Niall? I would be inclined to distrust the display on the charger and would be looking to check what voltage the battery really has available.

If there is a good supply in the battery then you may have a problem with your starter. There is at least one good pictorial thread on the site here which will be of help to you if that is the case.

If you do need to strip the starter then this thread by MikeP should be a big help to you.

Sometime a voltmeter will show full even though the battery is shot.

If several cells are knackered leaving a single functioning cell it will still show 13V, but there won't be sufficient power to turn the engine.

The best test is to see if your battery will turn the engine

The battery is shot, get a new on and all will be well.

Take off the starter cover

Connect the positive Jump lead to the TOP connection of the solenoid

Connect the Negative to the Exhaust clamp just in front of the gearlever

Connect to your car battery (or a known charged battery) and start it and run it

Turn on Ignition on bike and try starter

If the starter turns and bike starts it's the battery (N.B. Do not run bike with a goosed battery You'll fry something Switch it off and replace the battery )

If the clicks sound solid and lights dim STOP Sounds like your starter magnets have fallen off or the Grease plate is shorting the coils on the rotor
But this doesn;t usually happen just because the bike has been parked up usually you'll go thru a period of it going over really slowly and then jumping into life.

Again Stop trying to start it and remove the starter when it is clunking it draws a huge current and that is NOT good for your bikes electronics

Just tried it again. The engine symbol is on the screen and after a couple of attempts the ews! symbol appeared. It went away once I turned key off and on again. Lights are working on full no problem so reckon it must be the starter.

I am pretty sure it's your battery I had one a month ago that was doing this

But please do NOT keep trying to start it if the battery is duff the current surge is extremely Harmful to the bikes electronics

You'll find that that is generally the case Niall, plus with the help of someone with Jay's knowledge and experience you have the satisfaction of fixing your bike yourself, not to mention the money you have saved.

After jump starting my bike without any problems I assumed that my battery was goosed. Only got around to getting a new battery today. Went to tim molloys. Hey checked the old one foe me and confirmed my suspicions. Bought a new battery for 65 quid. Fitted it. Bike still won't start! Sounded like it was gonna start with an attempt to turn over tha engine but then it just went back to that clicking sound again. Was hoping to get te last four photo points done tomorrow.. Might have to bite the bullet and bring it into a mechanic.
