I changed the brake fluid at the weekend as part of my service, and the brake fluid in the front master cylinder was black, like guinness!!

Considering it has been "changed" twice by the dealer, I was appalled to find how black it had become in 12 mths.

The rear master cylinder was fine however, just a bit darker than the new stuff.

Do you think it's a coincidence that as the rear master cylinder is on show, that the fluid stays cleaner in it?

I've had the brake fluid in my car for 3 years and thats not as black!!

Rear master cylinder fluid being cleaner is not related to it being on show. I had black fluid sitting in the bottom of the master cylinder on my old 1985 Eliminator, but I was probably the first one to change it for years. How old is the bike? A bit suspect about the dealer having actually changed it twice before as I thought it would be age related.

How old is the bike -

sometimes the rubber bellows in the mastercylinder can colour the fluid -

Sorry, I was being a bit sarcastic, what I meant was, I thought the dealer had only changed tha back brake fluid, cos you can see that!

The bike is 3 years old now, I was charged for an annual service twice, which is supposed to include an brake fluid change. I don't think it was done, judging by the colour of the fluid, but I suppose it's hard to prove now.
At least now that I've done it myself I know it's been done. The brakes feel better too.
