Hello all,
heading back to Amsterdam via the black forest and wondered if anyone has any good routes to suggest through the Black Forest. Leaving from Chamonix then planning to go straight north before heading west to Amsterdam. Have around 5 days to get to Amsterdam and would like to get in some nice countryside en route. also any suggestions for accomodation in Black Forest would be welcome.
Planning it already with Via Michelin but have no idea of nice towns to visit or stay.

cheers
Kev

Have a look at Les Vosgues on the French side also - the Route des Cretes has been discussed before - around Geradmer and the D430 Gernay to Le Valtin. Good riding routes.

Been to the through the Black Forest a few times and have always been a bit dissapointed, nice roads but not a lot of scenery as the trees always seem to block the views.

Now prefer to stay on the motorway till Colmar and then into the Alcace, Vosgues area. Kaysersberg is worth a visit.

You cant go wrong on the B 500 its like Donington park in the countryside. My favourite part was down near the border to Schlusee. Brilliant. Best road ive been on. On the weekend we were there it was very busy with local bikers taking advantage of the good weather. But if i lived near it, i'd be there every rest day :)

I'm not a fan of the Black Forest either, so we rode the Route de Cretes in the Vosges a couple of weeks ago and it was a much more interesting road, especially as you actually get a view rather than just constant trees :thumb

I agree. I've enjoyed the Black Forest in the past but the French side of the Rhine Plane in the Vosge mountains is more interesting. In addition to the Route des Cretes you have the Alsace Wine Route and loads of other passes that run East-West such as Bonhomme & Schlutt. Colmar is a very pretty city and would make a nice base for touring the area.

My only criticism of the roads in the Vosges is the amount of over-banding used. Once the temperature rises this becomes molten and can provide some interesting slides.

as above and one section of route des cretes, after ballon from cernay has loads of loose chipping on the corners so not great but otherwise the area is great, irecommend to do the area on a weekday as loads of people there and caravans on weekends.
