My 1150 has started knocking out a bit of black smoke recently. It runs well and it's happened kinda suddenly.

Could it be the lamda sensor thingy??

Can it be cleaned or is it dead. Anyway of checking it???

If it's not that then the rings have gone and it will self destruct half way to spain :D:D:D Has Steptoe done a thread on roadside piton ring replacement :augie

whats it doing knocking out black smoke at four minutes to eleven?

Fuel comsumption is about normal. Changed the oil yesterday and i may have overfilled it slightly but it's still smoking a bit.

The pannier rails have a lot of soot deposit which suggests it's running rich, but I still get 200+ out of a tank (standard 23 litre). The plugs are not sooty though

It has done 56,000 :thumb2

Whatever it is, there's not really time to fix it now before Spain so I'll have to keep my fingers crossed

Take my 1200, you will get better fuel economy, no black smoke either :thumb2 It's just the leaky gearbox seals, leaky bevel drive and potetial CAN bus failures you have to watch for

Surely there within lies the problem, change of oil type, over filled (as stated). Don't worry too much, just take out the excess oil.

Sorry, what I meant is that it was slightly overfilled before I changed the oil. No excess in the airbox though.

I always thought that black smoke was caused by 'unburnt' fuel (or does that only apply to diesel engines), assuming that is the case could it be a spark plug/ignition type problem:nenau

The black smoke and sooty deposits sounds to me like it might be burning oil. I've seen this before on an 1150. It was blowing out black smoke and had black deposits on the pannier rail. It also gradually started to run badly and use excess fuel. It turned out it had both a faulty T.P.S. and too much oil in it. There was oil in the airbox, inlet rubbers and throttle bodies. Have you checked all of these?

You say it's "still smoking a bit" since you changed the oil. Does this mean that it's not as bad? Could still be a bit of oil there. If it's not using more fuel than usual, it's seems unlikely it's the T.P.S. but it might be worth checking it anyway. A compression test should tell you if it's needing new rings.

Black smoke generally means its running rich, so I would replace the airfilter (its possibly been overfilled with oil so it may be clogged) as St. Eptoe says, it could be the TPS setting:nenau

White smoke means oil/water is being burnt/vaporised

Blue smoke means the oil is ready for frying:rolleyes:

Shep

Wot he said, overfilled wiv oil will make the filter dirty as it spews into the airbox :thumb2
Maybe :)

Come to think of it, those guys are probably right- black smoke means running rich. But you'd think if it was that rich it wouldn't be running as well and you wouldn't be getting the same fuel consumption.:nenau
