Hi all,

I've just done a clean up of all the calipers on my bike, but i dropped the ball slightly and one of the pistons on the front came out slightly allowing some brake fluid to spill out. The piston didn't fully come out, just tilted slightly and let some fluid out of one side. I quickly got it back in and barely any fluid drained, and the reservoir hasn't gone down much (if at all) but I worry that I might need to bleed them. Plus, i'll want to change the fluid at some point anyway.

Can anyone refer me to a guide on how to do it on my bike? I've never done one with ABS before.

Unfortunately the reservoir on the bars is not the one that will have lost fluid that is contained within the ABS unit under the seat
I think it will need a full system bleed it's a bit involved but doable
Have a search on here or there is at least one good clip on YouTube

Unless I'm talking shite and an 09 bike is different from my 06 I'm sure a responsible adult will be along soon

Yours is later system, just bleed as normal topping up the reservoir on the master cylinder

+1 for that. I was informed by a BMW technician that the system should only need a purge on the diagnostic computer if air has got into the system, I'm willing to bet yours is OK as I've done the same myself with no problems.

Mine got air pulled through when I forgot to keep the reservoir topped up when bleeding a fully rebuilt rear caliper. I kept on going until it ran clear into the bleed tube. No problems.

Its not a difficult job. But takes me a few hours as a) I only do it once a year and b) I end up doing it twice because of the ABS. Its only my time thats the pain. Fluid costs just a few quid. Always good when its done. I like to see clear liquid and have hard brakes. Oooh er missus.

Am I reading the Haynes manual right when it says a brake fluid change has do be done by BMW???

Bare in mind there are two completely different braking systems on the 1200 models. Pre 2007 and post 2007.

I'm sure the Haynes advice is only referring to the pre 2007 bikes with the servo/abs fitted (although it can be done without taking it to BMW) .

Brake jobs can be a bit fussy and Haynes don't want to spend money on author time. So anything the least bit awkward defaults to "use the dealer".
