2019 GSA with just over 4000 miles, full BMW service history and in for a safety recall 10 days ago (with a oil service).

Went for a ride today and I noticed when I pulled up at the lights the revs were a little high.....Got to the destination (Southampton) and it sat there idling at 2000rpm WTF!

Turned it off, left for half hour and came back....turned it on. Engine fault alert, states safe to ride to nearest dealer but won't go above 5 mph so ended up calling BMW recovery.

Not even had it 3 months yet and only put 1000 miles on it.

As I said went in for that safety recall 10 days or so ago and had a oil service and given clean bill of health but there I was stranded.

Recovery guy says this is the 4th BMW in the past couple of weeks. Its now been taken into storage till Alton opens up tomorrow and I'm so far £65 out of pocket for a taxi home.

Never had a motorbike breakdown on me since I started riding in 2004 other than a flat tyre.

Lets see what tomorrow brings.:nenau

At least being recovered the dealers have to sort it out quickly as they have to report back to BMW HQ.

Sounds like the issue with my 2018 R1200GSA a couple of years ago. Dealer reported it was the throttle system which required re synchronising.

Its good to see others who have had the recall done are not also affected as thats what I immediately thought.

I had similar symptoms last year on my 2014 GSA ; very high idle , but no power whatsoever and refused to pull away from standstill . Started easily , revved high but still no use . Left me stranded for six hours in one of the hottest days .
First diagnosis was left throttle body failure , which is what my gs911 said and BMW confirmed .
A new throttle body did not fix the fault ; ended up needing a new ECU . Entire repair took nearly two months . All costs fully covered by BMW extended warranty (£2k approx ).

Wow this is going to get expensive for BMW then as its my only form of transport......hire car arrives tomorrow

Maybe they'll give me a bike to run around on once the hire car costs starts mounting up

I've had the software update as a part of the latest recall and bike works fine. But now after reading this it leaves me worried a bit.

The car will come through Enterprise and they don't have bikes. Maybe the dealer can provide you with one?

The fact you are in a car will focus the dealer into resolving your bike's fault

I hope its positive for you, but I think Alton is closed on Mondays?

sorry to hear your new gs has broken down, it will get sorted at no cost to you apart from the stress. if its any consolation , my 175 grand two year old scania broke down recently requiring engine out attention and out of action for weeks. My previous bmw gs bike broke down and had to be be recovered , it was fixed free of charge even though it was 4 years old. it must be boiling your blood just now but if your going to break down on anything then a bmw is the thing to break down on.

It's open, but the workshops are closed Mondays.

The SLA says the bike must be looked at within 48hrs , so expect a call Thursday ;)

Same fault on mine but the repair in Austria took 4 1/2 days, including waiting for a new ecu to be shipped from Germany and it cost under £1100

Yeah I've had 5 calls off them yesterday alone each time telling me they haven't got any cars....Had to borrow my ex's to get into work today

I wouldn't mind but I'm a contractor so no work no pay

Just for clarity the only indication I had a problem was high revving (1500-2000rpm) when idling at traffic lights other than that everything seemed to work fine.

It was only AFTER I turned the bike off and back on again did I get the warning message and then loss of power (I mean top speed of 4 mph and zero revs). Which I would assume is limp mode.

Alton are aware and just waiting for the bike to be delivered today.

Thank you

Yeah its annoying, more so that I don't get much time off so most of my day was spent waiting. I
've never had a bike breakdown on me before so kinda angry at that as well.

Your symptoms are identical to mine ( as above ).
FWIW, the replacement ecu was not simply a replacement … it changed things , for-the better and I am not imagining it ;
The fuelling was better
The start up process , in which my flappy valve used to do a dance , no longer does that dance , instead it only responds to to engine speed now .
My heated grips , which were never hot enough ( a common complaint in that era ) are now nicely hot.

BMW do not have enough semiconductors to make heated seats , at the moment , so good luck .

Well I know its now at the dealers but when they get to look at it is anyones guess (Though someone mentioned has to be within 48hrs)
