A guy on another forum I am on has had this done to his R90/6 flywheel it weighs 2.380 KG or 5lb 4oz

I don;t know about the rest of you but I am in two minds Yes Lovely and Much lightened but maybe too much lightened risk of shattering maybe?

Looks Damn pretty tho!!

Very nice. It's going to rattle like a bastard at tickover and have bugger all torque. Why would you want to do it?
 
looks nice but i like to ride one with and one without to see how differant they are . i prefer torque to top end generally so probably not unless it was on a special maybe :thumb2

i bet his drill bit is blunt now :D

I know little about flywheels, but I wouldn't be happy with that in a machine
 
Does not look to have enough area left for the clutch driven plate to drive on, recon we may have slippage :nenau

Won't it make the bike into a slug when starting of from a standstill ?

It should spin up PDQ , but as said, bugger all torque and no engine braking. He should've bought an RD. :blast

First thing he'll be disappointed with will be the poor idle running.

But apart from those little quibbles, are there any good points ?
 
Love to see how it vibrates at high speed and low speed for that matter due to bugger all balancing but heh ho if we didn't push things and try we wouldn't get anywhere.

Flywheel mass helps to damp the inertia of the spinning masses and hence why a boxer or a Guzzi twists below you when you rev it at a standstill

But with everything there is a critical mass where the damping saps engine power

Why would the bike vibrate more if the flywheel was lightened?

It was done by Jim Cray, who has a good reputation with airhead boxers. Does seem a bit much though.

1,,, It IS balanced, look at the machining twixt some holes.
Butler and Smith were the first to do this to a flywheel as far as I know
2,,, Jay is right but by feck they do rev well.
3,,, Jim Cray has been doing this to flywheels for years and years, mainly for Classic bike Boxer racing...

How do I know?
Well in 1979/80 we had an EX Butler and Smith racing R90/6 in for a clutch change, owner had bought it over with him from USA [USAAF flyer]
I took it out after and it would have blown my R90s into the dust on the quick bits [or track].
In town tho' it was a nightmare, stalling if you pulled away with less than 2.5K revs...
Remember it was Butler and Smiths efforts in racing that bought about the R90s as a production bike..
