R1200RT IN GLENCOE

What a great beat you've got Gus:D Now, you are obviously a man who understands motorsikels and enjoys them.... I hope you cut the boys bit of slack up this route (slightly on the fast side but safe), many of whom have never experienced that freedom on roads like this before. Feel free to continue to arrest the knobs as usual though:D

thunderbird:beerjug:

you sir have exquisite taste:ChrisKelly

Yep Thunderbird Sport and a lovely bike Chad. This one is 10 years old and I managed to buy it with only 1,700 miles on the clock abot 18 months back. Only gets used in the sunny days days and currently trying to Cafe it up a bit:thumb

All in favour of using discretion, certain roads need to be ridden! Cant make any promise for the camera vans though :nenau

Great stuff Gus:thumb Most are sensible to be honest and the ones that aren't probably need to get a warning / points. Chasing bikes up the glen....brilliant:thumb

My new one, just about ready for first service at 600 miles so we're 'bonding' :D Takes a little time to get used to after the GS, not much though as its super smooth....now tested on every road type my GS loved up this neck of the woods and its handled it all perfectly:thumb

looks great - I am sorely tempted.

go on then guys lets hear it - if you are not going off road why would you want a GS as opposed to an RT or vice versa. The motorway cruising is a no brainer but is it really as confidence inspiring, good at dealing with crap road surfaces and nimble in the tighter twisties as a GS ? what about pushing it around carparks ?

turn up at a meet on a GS and you'll be invisible.

turn up at a meet on a GSA and you'll be seen as a Ewan wannabe.

turn up at a meet on a RT and people will expect you to have a beard when you remove your helmet, before smoking on a pipe and lecturing them about their riding lines not meeting ROSPA standards.

This being said, my next bike will be a RT...I do too many motorway miles on my GSA to only get 43mpg and still suffer windblast.

funny that most of the Rospa bore's i meet dont even ride BMWs:D

Changed from a 1200GS about a month ago now - my GS was an 06 bike and was just a bit fed up of how much time it was "laid up" for a better word - also found that I was enjoying more open road action than back lane bashing.....

After the original test ride I liked the RT but wasn't quite sure (when I got back on the GS to come home from the dealer I thought "this feels comfy and familiar". However I had a little niggle that I NEEDED to try something a bit different because the reliability niggles had even pushed me to look at other manufacturers.

i concluded a deal with Rainbow for the RT and kept my fingers crossed.

1 month on and what can I say - FANTASTIC - comfy, plush, swift (notice I didn't say fast - it just feels swift without being in your face aggressively fast - i cant really explain it). A big difference in high winds - no real side movement like the GS and the screen works without modifications. Seat is like an armchair and the whole thing just feels complete...

All I can say is I am happy - I am glad I made the move, I miss the "presence" of the GS but I reckon the bond with the RT will just get bigger the more miles I rack up.

I did look at a few other makes but the BMW was the best value - Yamaha must have thought their bike was made of Platinum and my GS was made of shit with the deal they put together - the only other strong contender was Honda with the Pan but I just couldn't gel with it or the dealer who didn't really seem too interested.

All in all the RT is a great bike.

Rik

BMW are getting proper antsy about triumph mimicking there sucesses , if imitation is the best form of flattery i dont see an issue:D

Swaying to a RT again.......................how good is the TwinCam, I did 150 miles on a demo one last year and thought it was good.........................very good

Very, very good. I have a 12 month old 1200RT and it's excellent. Very composed and superbly designed. You can cover huge distances in comfort.

The trouble is I also have a 2005 1150GSA which is a bit rough around the edges but is just more fun.

What a pile of shite..........

I had a 2011 1200RT as a loan bike today and it is probably the worst bike I have ever ridden.

First off, the riding position. Is the seat height-adjustable? My knees were up under my armpits and I felt like I should be wearing a clowns outfit and riding it round a circus ring.

The mirrors!!! What an absolute f.cking joke. How the hell they sell bikes with mirrors this poor I'll never know. As much use as tits on a fish.

The handling!!! It doesn't want to lean over at all, you have to force it over and then it feels like it's really scared and about to crap itself. It tries to sit back up and the front wheel starts to tuck under. it's horrible.

Stability. There isn't any. Falls off white lines and overbanding like you wouldn't believe. Very susceptible to side-winds and feels like the wheels are going to wash out from under you. (My 1200 Adventure on the return journey in the same conditions just got buffeted around but still felt secure.)

This was a 2500 mile bike with good tyres, ESA set on solo/normal and no obvious defects or damage.

The switchgear. Yuk. Looks cheap and nasty and is very small and fiddly and that was with summer gloves on. Getting back on my GS was wonderful, big, chunky and nicely-spaced switches.

The instrument display. Too dark. Can't see feck all. (until you go under the trees, then it all lights up and looks lovely :thumb)

The verdict. I wouldn't have one given, which came as a surprise because I think they look quite nice. :nenau And it was a pretty colour.

I was very glad to see the back of it :barf

You're right, its a crap machine and never wins any awards etc year on year... how many miles did you do on it again?:comfort You are welcome to your view of course but most of your comments are way off the mark as far as I'm concerned. Had one 6 months now, didn't buy it to be another GS, its superb at what its designed for:thumb

Anyway, to anyone looking at trying one...go do it, make your own mind up.......its a terrific machine:clap
