Blown Bulb

What are the best standard replacement bulbs? I blew 2 on our European trip this autumn in 5,000 miles - I think it's the first time I've blown a bulb on a bike - but now have to replace the bulb kits for future trips.

So - best bulb?

Your local BMW dealer, but only if it is really convenient, apparentlly.

Failing that, Google H7 bulb and take your pick. Not sure which one between the £1:60 version and the £19 one (makes BMW look cheap)? A search on here will answer your question.

You could have swapped the main beam and low beam bulbs over. Then you would at least have had a low beam.

That I did not know - Thanks!

Why not name the stealer and then we could all be wary of them.

No point really, if I had called in advance they would have quoted £15.32
Another poster earlier said he got charged £16 for a bulb, so that is the cost of purchasing an H7 at Motorrad.

It's just a bit of a shocker when you stand with a handful of shrapnel to pay for 2 bulbs, and the printed invoice spews out with grander ideas.

I am sympathetic to the overheads of a showroom & like to support them. Had I have liked a freshly ground coffee with odd looking sugar, I'm sure nobody would have batted an eyelid.
Feel free to pull my pants down and ram a niner up my arse when a dealer only part expires. Add 15.32 onto the price of my service ... I will never know.

But why oh why do they have to skank you on a readily available consumable? It just exposes them in my book!

In stark contrast I called in at the VW dealer last month (bought a couple of new motors & all servicing for the last 7 years) for a daytime running bulb, and the spares bloke tosses 2 at me FOC and says "best change 'em both mate".

It was just a gesture of good will that means a lot & the total opposite to how I felt at 4.30 on Saturday. :thumby:

With a Halfords trade card = £6.78 a pair. :D

Halfords heavy duty H7s are £15 a pair and last much longer than other bulbs I have used.

:rob

Steptoe, seems to be the obvious choice?

:D

Get a car lamp kit from your local ASDA, Tesco etc for about a fiver. It has the item you require plus stop & tail, indicator, fuses etc that you can use on your car, assuming you have one.

Best bulb ..... probably the BMW o/e one from the dealer.
Best place to buy ..... see above!

However, if you don't want the "best" and are happy to buy cheap then choose any motor factors, the closer the better because it's less trouble if you need to get another.

I've just sold my BMW tin-top at 8 years old, I bought it new and did 93,000 miles in it. Only 3 failed bulbs in that time - first (brake light) failed at 5 years, then both headlights (also H7) failed within 3 months of each other at 7 years .... and regularly I see other makes of car with bulbs out at only 18 months old!
Not all bulbs are equal and not all bulbs are priced the same, but the buyer has a choice.

Buy the BMW lamp if you want longevity. Expensive must be better, right???

The filaments are most probably made from pure unobtanium, expertly rolled by hand on the inner thigh of a Virgins leg whilst sat astride a Unicorn.

That is probably true but in my experience price is not a reliable indicator of quality in this field. I've had cheap chinese imports outlast expensive Osram "motorcycle" bulbs.

The blown bulb managed 10.5 thousand miles before going pop. My previous 1200 blew 2 or 3 replacement cheapies in about the same sort of mileage.

One thing for sure is I have never got through bulbs on other bikes like I do on lumpy Boxer twins.

You do need to carry a spare as dipped or main can go at any time - This means that should you lose a light and require a bulb, you will be wise to buy a spare at the same time.
And if you choose to purchase the 2 bulbs from the main dealer, you will be asked to part with over £30

BE WARNED! :thumby:

Do you haved a vimeo link for that process? ;)

Not likely, it's a closely guarded Bee-Emm trade secret.

Ask Fanum mate, he's the UKGSer Porn King. If he can't get it, it's not available. :D
