Afternoon all....

Took advantage of a rare day off yesterday and washed the bike by hand for the first time in ages. It usually gets a hose down and spray off lately or proper wash and spray when serviced (every couple or 3months).

Made an excuse for an errand this morning and actually riding in the light for once - got back to find oil (very thin) on the rear of front mudguard. It appears to be dripping onto horizontal crash bar in first piccie.....but not now standing (unless any oil has long since drained). You can see theres a good coating on the mud guard though (that's not polish...). Doesnt seem to have sprayed anywhere else, tyre clear - you can see bash plate is clear.

As part of pampering yesterday I did fill engine oil up but careful not to go over 3/4 sight window (paranoid I'll stick too much in it..). I'm assuming there's no 'release' for main engine oil and it simply hasnt 'leaked' and that this is the shock knackered and leaking ? The only similar thing I've had was a GSA from 4yrs ago whose LHS fork blew - similar mess etc. They both look fine though.

Hasnt been ridden for a week - which is the longest in its 2.5yr and 27k life.

2010 GSA (not that I think that makes a difference with shocks :augie)

Advice on cost for replacing or fixing a shock - dealer or 3rd party please ?

If you do a search on leaking 1200 shocks, you'll probably choke on your beverage when you see the price BMW charge for a replacement.

Call John Gaskell at Revs Racing in Halesowen on 0121 501 3321 and ask if it can be repaired, if not he can sort you a Wilbers shock (which is a major improvement over the stock BMW item ) at a lot less money.

I had Wilbers on my previous 1200 and it was a great improvement over the stock suspension (which is built to a budget.) If my current 2008 GSA suspension with ESA fails, that is where I will be heading.

...so I'm going to have problems with ESA also ? Presumably they have to be adjustable/compatible ?

shocking

Just had the rear shock replaced on my 2010 30yr anniversary gsa.
Bike sat in the garage since November and rear shock started to leak for no apparent reason, drips on garage floor.
Bike just over two and a half years old with 20k on the clock, no extended warranty but a full service history.
Dealer supplied a new shock free of charge and I paid for fitting.:thumb

Wow - 30th anniversary GSA myself. Ill speak to the dealer tomorrow, if that fails....ill move to Scotland and try your dealer ! Cheers.

Same Again

Jan this year with just over 30k, 2010 GSA, new rear ESA shock supplied and fitted FOC.

As other posts though, full dealer service and extended warranty (worth it in the end!)

one of my mates 09 GSA rear shock sprang a leak.
I advised him to approach his dealer for a good will replacement, as he had FSH and only 16k miles.

low and behold, he got a new ESA shock fitted FOC.

If that fails and you cant afford a new shock, try an independent technician. One told me that (almost) any shock which is not welded shut can be rebuilt. He fits a new gas injection valve cleans everything and refills the oil. All done for about £100.
