BMW 3rd year garauntee cost

"will be interesting to see if a 4th year warranty will become available"?

isn't it? why wouldn't it be - you can extend bmw car warranties as long as you like up to "X" amount of miles can't you?

i thought it would be the same with the bikes - - - - :nenau

Even if BMW do reduce their annual warranty extension charge to circa £450 per annum it is still double what you would pay for a mecahnical breakdown warranty through either Warranty Works or Warranty Direct. The latter has formed a deal with the BMW Club. If it is simply peace of mind against unexpected breakdown costs either of these policies provide better value.

Alternatively, put the money you would have spent on an extended warranty cover into a Bank / Building Society account so that you have funds to pay for anything whch does go wrong with the bike.

Has anybody successfully claimed through them yet for a BMW bike? Proof of the pudding and all that.

I've just had my letter in asking for £459 to provide a 12 month warranty or £130 to provide the Insured emergency service cover.

I've only had the bike 6 months and only put 6k on it for various reasons. It only has 7.5k on it in total as the last owner did a around 1.5k in a year and a half - criminal!!. Surely if it goes wrong BMW will do a good will repair?

I am a little nervous as I ride through the winter and don't think it has been through a winter yet. Worried about corrosion etc, not to mention the final drive and gear box issues others mention.

I can't afford to pay for the warranty extension, neither can I afford to pay for any major works. Not sure if my lack in confidence in the bike is justified because it is a bad product or if it is a result of reading this forum!!

It's an 06 bike and has had the battery and the wee fuel unit thingy behind the left pannel replaced under warranty. I suppose I just have to pray that if anything major is going to go, that it does so before Jan 31st!!

Anything could happen really. This forum will highlight problems, so a random sample of posts in the 1200 technical section will obviously give you a pessimistic view of reliability. That said, I don't think anybody will tell you that your gearbox isn't going to go kaput in the next few months.

My advice would be to ride the fekker and worry about the consequences when (and if) then happen.

There appears to be a history of BMW UK putting their hands in their pockets for major repairs in the 3rd year on low mileage bikes, which yours certainly is.

The goodwill support I have had from BMW has been exceptional. Partly BM and largely down to the dealer (I suspect).

IIWY I would expect a good chance of BM contributing all or a substantial part of the costs of any major failures. However I suspect this would not extend to things like post initial warranty corrosion issues.

Extended guarantees

I am sure that the desirabilty for extended guarantees rather depends on two major facts : 1. the mileage and your 'type' of riding each year and 2.the efficiency and experience of your dealer. As far as I am concerned my GS, bought new, is now over three years old and has completed 16,000 kms. Not a great deal but where I live there are a lot of hills and corners and rough road surfaces - but I dont ride 'hors piste.'.
The dealer in Lyon is excellent, has a high reputation and will often road test bikes in himself.
I have had virtually NO PROBLEMS AT ALL and when/if I trade it in for a new bike (which i could afford to do now) someone will purchase a very good S/H bike. Yes, I know the gearbox or the servo brakes or the fuel system could fail tomorrow - but I have not had any serious problems in 30 years with various BMW's - but that might just be because of my 'type' of riding.

i did 50,000 in the first 2 years - only done around 10,000 this year - i am sure this has cropped up before on the site - there are several higher milegae 1200s around...... mine is looking rather tired - i will put some pics up when i get home - am in dubai for 3 weeks "working" - yes - the weather is lovelly - yes - my tan is coming on nicely........ (i can't help it if they give you wifi access on the roof top pool...........) :beerjug:

I've just been offered (this week) an extended warranty for £450.

provided that I accept the offer by June last year . . . .

My warranty expired on 29/12/07 but because I complained that I hadn't received any renewal paperwork (they claimed it was posted off at the end of November), they phoned me back today and agreed after "consultation with my Manager" to renew it for £495 provided I take it up there and then!

When I protested and said that I had no idea what the terms of the new policy would be, they initially said "the same as your Manufacturers warranty", when I questioned them more closely and asked if that included corrosion, they again put me on hold pending further discussion with the Manager, before coming back and saying that it didn't.

They've now agreed to give me a few more days to think about it and put the details of the renewal in the post.

I can't see myself going for it. Still to expensive and for a bike in it's 3rd year, if I get a material problem I'll no doubt be having a discussion with my main dealer (those awfully nice chaps in Northampton) about it. :hide

Let's face it, it'll need to be something really big going kaput to warrant paying an arm and a leg up front for peace of mind. I think I'd rather take the chance.

You can extend beyond 3 years

i just checked with NOG (my dealer) they say that you can extend the BMW warranty (again) when the bike is 3 years old.

Last January I bought a 2000 R850R, FSH, 25k miles from Blue Bell with 12 months Appoved Used BMW warranty, I don't know if this covers the same stuff as the 3rd year warranty but they've just sent me a renewal. £459 for 12 months warranty or £130 just for the emergency service cover.

It's nice of them to offer but I don't think I'll bother.

Had a letter through yesterday for an '05 1200GS quoting me £495 for 12 months BMW Insured Warranty.
Would politely decline if I hadn't traded it last October for an '07 ADV.

Seems like a lot of money. However, with a set of gearbox seals and a new clutch coming in at about £800 it could be worth a punt if you're the nervous type.

iainw -

welcome to the site.

i was just posting to say you can extend the warranty beyond 3 years - so this would be a 4th year warranty!

(an earlier poster suggested that one could not extend the warranty after the 3rd year, my dealer says you can......)

all this posted about it,why dont we all write to bm about it?better than nothing

Strange than you can buy the emergency service cover separately but not the warranty cover. I have UK & European break down cover included with my insurance, so don't really need the BM cover. This would make the warranty £330 which seems OK.

smokescreen.

Agreed................Other bike manufacturers bike extended warranties are much cheaper and cars well..............there's no comparison

Guess how much the BMW dealer pays for an AUB extended BMW warranty & recovery.............it ain't £660 or £460:augie
