BMW Connected Navigator

Hi Woodster,
1 - I can do routes on google and convert to GPX on mapstogpx.com then load them onto the Navigator.
Early days for me though yet with that and I have found it can alter the actual route when transferred and dunno why yet, but for simple direct routes, it works well. Must just need me to put more waypoints in it to ensure it goes where I want and not the route it may choose (faster/shorter etc)
2 - I've used a USB lead from my desktop to the Navigator which has a USB c connector. Once my google trip is converted by mapstogpx.com, I save it on my desktop and transfer it to the Nav. for use on the device when ready.
3 - Don't know that one for sure soz.
4 - Yes, that's why I liked my old Zumo550 and with the Nav, without being connected, I can enter addresses with the search function or simply press on the screen where I want to go and it drops a pin to set your route.
The app on my phone, also allows me to do that so I suppose that when I'm away and perhaps have locked my Nav in hotel room, while sat in pub or tent, I can set trip plan for next day on just my phone which connects a syncs with the Nav when back on bike. The plans from the pub the night before will magically appear on your Nav.
I'm happy so far.
Thank you very much.

I find the plain maps so much nicer.

I was using the connected ride app on my 1250adv and really liked its simplicity and easy to read maps.

I’m back on an 1150 (which is brilliant and through choice) and the Harley, so I treated myself to an XT2.

It has some great features, but the map colours do my head in and it’s nowhere near as clear to follow a route imho.

I had a play with the navigator unit when I took Liz’s 1250 for a service (a good reminder why I went back to old tech). It’s just like the connected ride app, so I felt at home with it straight away.

If you go off road it’s poo, but for getting from a-b it’s a brilliant bit of kit, it’s just £250 overpriced!

Looking to put a SIM card in my CRN. No real reason, just want to see how it behaves. Any recommendations on a SIM/network provider?

Put an old Tesco pay as you go in mine, has a couple of GB available I think.
Have yet to receive any traffic information as a live report, but not using bike so much at moment.
I'd use the wifi at home or in hotel /B&B to save on data as you'd do with anything else, rather than my mobile data, but haven't found any real advantage to having the SIM fitted yet.

When I bought my bike a few months ago I spent a while researching this stuff and I didn’t like the sound of the connected nav and I still don’t. I’d much rather have a standalone unit. I’d read all the issues people were having with the nav6 so I didn’t fancy that either. I ended up going with a zumo xt and so far it’s been brilliant, it’s really bright and clear, takes postcodes (I assumed they all do?), it zooms in and out just when you need it to and it’s really straight forward to use.
There was a big discount for Bike Social members at the time (probably still is) and I got it for half the price of a nav6.
I must admit though I’ve used it more in my campervan than on my bike so far.

Is the connectedride navigator the only system that can be used with the bike controls (spinny wheel thingy) other than using a smartphone, or are there any cheaper alternatives? I don't want to use my phone as it's an iPhone and Apple advise using them on motorbikes as the vibrations can break so of the internals :nenau

As it’s an illegal feature in many European countries I can’t imagine ‘corporate BMW’ condoning it by incorporating it into their latest devices. The way things are going here in the UK, I wouldn’t be surprised if it became illegal here, too.

These days, I do the mass majority of my motorcycling miles on roads south of the Channel and have never made use of a camera warning feature, I just keep my eyes peeled.
Are you sure it's illegal to warn about speed cameras as my wife's Evoque warns you with an audible bleep of upcoming fixed speed cameras?

Certainly illegal in France. TBH I think most satnav devices including phones are intelligent enough to know whether it's illegal or not in the country they're currently in and configure themselves accordingly.

Yes it’s illegal in France to warn of radars, all the GPS editors and Coyote etc. warn of “dangerous zones” instead

Not quite as pinpoint as the radars were but it’s a legal workaround

Sorry I misread your post, I see now you said in some European countries and surprised it’s not in England :blast

Have I understood correctly; in one of the responses someone said the CRN works without the app? Does not seem right I thought the CRN relied upon the app. I have been going over many times in my mind and still undecided.
1 The Nav 6 is unreliable , but uses the wonder wheel ,
2 The CRN (to my understanding needs the app) but has high connectivity options, but you are then tied to BMW
3 I am looking at the XT (I currently have the 660 but the screen is a little too small for my eyes). The XT is nearest to the reliable 660
4 The XT2, have heard varying opinions on Tread and has extras that I do not need, plus the cost is high.
Ultimately I am looking or a 660 equivalent with a larger screen. I like Garmin as it will easily fit on my GS1250. Something Tom Tom cannot achieve
Cheers

After years of past Nav systems, Ive now setrled on the XT. Binned the BMW mount and fitted the XT mount, with the patch lead.

Faultless.

Any definitive answer on the BMW connected ride navigator unit and speed camera warning (or dangerous road alert if in France..)
I am aware that cameras are (mostly) visible, but there are so many cameras and speed limit changes these days, even the wary can get caught, thanks.

I think bmw are updating the connected ride all the time, ive just had a map up date which takes a time to download.. I personally like that when its connected to the bike it comes up with the speed on the road you are on but even getting it to connect to the bike takes ages and if you start riding sometimes it doesn’t connect

is it much of a job to get rid of the bmw mount and install an xt cradle ?
No, Purchase the Adapter cable about £15 quid. Remove the nav prep and fit XT Mount. Just plug the XT cable back in where you unplugged the Nav Prep cable, under the beak. Job done. There is a thread I posted here that explains it all.
