BMW Dealer fitted HID - rubbish

Hi all
Took my 1200GSA into dealer for a recall on the fuel pump relay and whilst there I asked them about the HID's they do, all the sales guys said how great they are and that they couldn't be without them... blah blah
So as I was there I asked them to fit one on the dip as they recomended.

Tonight I went for a test ride in the dark and it is RUBBISH.... it lights up about a cars length really (2 long white lines) well but after that - nothing, horrible, I turned round and came home as I couldn't ride with it - gutted!
I don't need to see right in front of my bike, but a bit further, this is no better, maybe worse, than the std dip bulb.
I have tried to adjust the dip by turning the hex plastic bolt (top right) but it doesn't change anything.
Has anyone else tried these BMW supplied kits?

The plastic hex just does fine adjustment. Theres a lever with arms either side of it that you can flip up and down for much coarser adjustment.

Has anyone else tried these BMW supplied kits?

No, I've got a cheap Honkongese 50W 6000 Deg K one in mine and its pretty good.

there is no 'topic' on ukgser - the thread subject is just a vague guideline and opening gambit for discussion.

You're correct, and apologies.

It could be that they haven't seated the burner correctly in the holder, you could have a look at that if you're happy to do it yourself, but the dealer should at least have checked the alignment before handing it over to you.

Since you paid them to fit the HID, I'd get back to them and make them aware of the problem - adjusting the headlamp aim is a pretty basic thing for them to do properly.

Yes, any HID conversion should make a noticeable improvement, something's wrong, put the bike facing a wall, flip the lever that surrounds the adjuster, if it makes no difference they've popped the adjuster off in the headlight (take it back in) if not start adjusting, they may have adjusted it low to make sure you don't blind on coming traffic.

The main beam (high) is ok (as far as adjustment goes) so I only need to adjust the dip, can this be done?
Also, is there a way of getting the headlight on without a running engine, perhaps some clever button holding or pressing?

just start it up then it the kill switch, headlight then stays on

Check they have seated the H7 in the fitting correct, some try to install with out removing the pod and get the bulb in the wrong slots, makes a difference.

All fixed, turned out the person that fitted must have moved the headlight as it was badly out of adjustment, there was also a small piece of plastic sitting in the bottom of the headlight and it looked like the l/r adjust was U/S, BM fitted a new headlight under warranty and it was much better.

The unit they fitted was a 35w and once I had compared this with a 50w setup that a mate has, I replaced both the dip and main with 50w HID's from Less W (top man and very helpful).
Now I can see where I am going on the back roads I use.

Sounds to me like whoever fitted the HID upgrade buggered your headlight. I am sure they would have known this at the time and thought that if they keep quiet the problem would go away. Eeedjut.

Good to hear that ? I was riding with HID lamps but without ballasts for one week until the dealer had the time to install them. (My setup is 2x H11 and 1x H7 6000k). The difference was huge, can light up a football stadium these days.
