Seems to be a hot discussion, anyone tried or considered the BMW alternative, any comments would be appreciated :)

Cheers Dawg

I have one I quite like it but prefer my Tour X

I can't quite put my finger on why but with both helmets on the shelf I grab the tour X 70% of the time

Stumpy

How not to buy a helmet

Tried BMW's Enduro on a while ago but didn't like it, as I felt the chin bar was too close to my chin. And I'm used to a System 4, the chin bar of which I would have expected to have given even less clearance.

I then did a very stupid thing - ordered an Arai TourX 3 without trying one on (although I did have my head measured by an HG salesman first). I was seduced by the price I was quoted - considerably less than £300. Wasn't prepared for the length of time I had to wait for it! Fortunately for me, it turned out to be a perfect fit, and very comfy.:thumb2

And I prefer the looks of the TourX to the BMW Enduro, but that could be just me.

Enduro

Had one from Vines last week at their Hogroast - £175 down from £200. I'm very happy with it so far but not been out much in it yet.
May be worth enquireing if any left
Cheers
Mike

Very happy with mine BUT it is noisy, and in sidewinds the wind catches the peak and can make your head go all overth eplace.

very comfortable though.

I also use a conventional "road" helemet, and if I am going out for more than a few hours generally pick up the road based hat.

In summary, it is a good helemet but if I could only have one helmet, it wouldn't be the Enduro.

I tried the BMW, the Shoei Hornet and the X-3 all in the space of a few days. As I've got a Shoei Multitech I thought the Hornet would suit me best,in fact it was the worst...for me anyway. The BMW was comfy but I thought the peak was a bit flimsy and was not keen on not having a pinlock insert. I thought that the Tour X-3 would be the least favourable as I'd already had a try on of the out-going model and wasn't keen, but this turned out to be the best in all departments. The new peak feels much more robust and my head does not get pulled about at motorway speeds + the pinlock works a treat:thumb Stll pefer my Multitech for longer trips though, but that's just habit!

enduro for me,had mine for about 8 months now at first I thought I had the wrong size it was very tight but now love it .the strong gusts can catch you out and try to rip your head off.even better with the dark visor on

The BMW Enduro lid is.......

cheap, nasty shite. I had mine for about 6 months before it fell apart and I brought me 3 year-old TourX out of retirement.

They are noisy.
The padding is cheap.
The peak is flimsy.
You have to dismantle the padding to fit an Autocom or similar.
The visor rubs on the peak unless you keep the peak back.
The peak is next to uselss against low sun, as it's too pointy.
The whole inner shell breaks loose from the outer shell and slides about.

In short, it's shite....... and that's from everyone I've spoken to who's had one for a while. The Hornet I tried on several times felt no better than the BMW lid..... same type of lining & padding.

If the TourX fits, buy it. It really isn't worth the relatively small saving on the BMW lid for all the length of time it lasts.

Thanx :-(

Thanx everyone for your responses, I guess the search goes on !!

Its a bloody good off road helmet
Noise doesnt matter off road
The padding is very comfortable
The peak breaks off when hitting trees rather than ruining a good lid.
Why on gods earth would you want autocom on a dirt bike
Visor???? use goggles off road
sunshine what bloody sunshine
LOL
I wear one its ok but have had better
:augie

I got my BMW Enduro Helmet the day they launched (well over 2 years ago) and had no great problems with the helmet at all and despite having 4 or 5 other decent helmets (including System 4 and Integral) I have probably used it 95% of the time over the last couple of years. The other 5% has been a System 4 with BMW open face conversion used for dropping Skye off at School and local runs (Surprisingly quiet conversion:eek:) Not even used my BMW Integral yet, should have resisted the sale tag on it.

Maybe MY BMW Enduro Helmet went through a tougher quality control for the launch ;) Found the peak fine in keeping the sun out of my eyes and didn't think the peak was that pointy. No problems at all with the shell or lining. Everything still firmly in place. I have used it with a F650 and my R1200GS and for me it works perfectly well. I don't have any problems with vibrations of catching the wind (Standard GS screen as well). Peak always in low position and no scratches on visor, not that I use the visor often as I find the helmet works fine with the GS with my visor up. I find the helmet quite light and fits well and have often worn it all day long with no problems at all. No problems if torrential downpours either.

I do find it tight to get on and off though and certainly never bothered trying to fit my spare starcom speakers to it, hence why I just put loudspeakers on my bike . Its not the quietest helmet I have owned, but neither the noisest.

I have not used or tried on a TourX so can't compare on quality but can at least say there is one BMW Enduro Helmet which is not shite.

Bought mine from Ocean at the launch of the 800gs. £200.00
Couldn't afford the bike so bought the helmet.
Been v pleased with it so far.
Excellent peripheral vision, I don't have to twist my neck as far as my old road helmet to do a lifesaver.
Visor does' resonate a bit sometimes but I only notice if I'm not using ear plugs or I pod.
I wore it home from Plymouth (just over an hour) then wore it on the Lands End trial so had it on for the most part of a day. Most comfortable helmet I've had.
The trail bike magazine test said it was a peculiar fit so I must have a peculiar head!!!:o
Can't really comment on longevity but so far so good.

I have an enduro too, had it a couple of years, wanted a tour x, cos i love my quantam f but the tour x just didn't fit my bonce. Overall I am well pleased, bit noisy, but peripheral vision is excellent, build quality I think is fine. My pennyworth tonight.

I've done about 25,000 miles in my Enduro and despite owning a system 5 as well, it is my lid of choice. To answer some of you comments:

cheap, nasty shite. I had mine for about 6 months before it fell apart and I brought me 3 year-old TourX out of retirement.

They are noisy. Aren't all enduro style helmets noisy?
The padding is cheap. Can't comment on the price but it seems to ensure a great fit
The peak is flimsy. does that matter?
You have to dismantle the padding to fit an Autocom or similar. true, but you can simply buy replacement pads for the autocom and swap out as appropriate
The visor rubs on the peak unless you keep the peak back. so don't put forward when you are using the visor, when you're using goggles you can put it all the way forward
The peak is next to uselss against low sun, as it's too pointy. it's a lot less useless than no peak
The whole inner shell breaks loose from the outer shell and slides about. no idea what you are referring to here, mine has been fine

The other parts you have missed:

Great peripheral vision
Very simply to swap out visors (two screws only needing half a turn and don't need to be removed)
Removable peak so you can use it as a road helmet
Removable visor with good fit for goggles
Best of all - it's very light

I think it's shite might be a little strong... :augie

I have the Shoei Hornet and I've just done a 3000 mile trip around Europe. It wasn't any noisier than my other helmets. The peak flexed in the wind and when I dropped my bike onto the grass at the camp-site in Belgium with the helmet on the wing mirror the peak was buried into the muddy grass. The peak bent and then when I picked the bike up the helmet peak returned to it's normal position and shape.

I was very impressed. The Tour X peak would have snapped off. As for the other points raised above. I have an autocom fitted with no problems and the lining is snug.

The venting was very good and as I rode through Southern Germany in temperatures of 36c I noticed cool airflow when I raised my head a little in order for the peak to catch the air. :D

Freeloader, I'd love to know where you got an X3 for 'the price I was quoted - considerably less than £300.' So far I've found the plain ones to all be £299, give or take 10%.

It was what you might call a "private sale" - I'm now thinking that I probably ought not to mention any names, in case the person who did me the favour gets in trouble for it. (I'm certain there was nothing illegal about it!)

Besides, I think any chance of getting another through the same channel might have gone now. Before saying any more I'll need to speak to the gentleman in question. Watch this space.

Thanks Freeloader. Clearly all names have been changed to protect the innocent! I'm just chasing up a quote of £239.99, which I just can't believe is for an X3; surely an older 'X' for that price.

Good price!

Slightly better than mine, I think it was £255 or thereabouts, but it was a price I was happy with. And it's definitely an X3, with the British ACU gold label on it. The only thing I'm slightly diasappointed with is the chin curtain, it doesn't seem to do much for me.

Having said that, it's my first Arai, and my old System 4 :rob (whose flip front I was reluctant to do without) hasn't been out of the cupboard since I got it.

£239? I'd say bite their hand off.

I've been using my BMW Enduro a lot lately. Just used it on a recent trip.

It's light, comfortable and quieter than any flip-front lid I've used. Quieter than my old Shoei X8R too.

Peripheral vision is excellent. The peak works well enough in low sun and does deflect some rain.

It's a damned sight cooler than any helmet I've used before. So much so that there's none of my usual desire to open the front of my System IV or V as soon as speed drops. I don't even feel the need to lift the visor when stationary or trickling slowly.

At first I didn't like the double D-Ring, now it feels more secure and is easier to accommodate something like a buff without the pre-set length of buckle fastenings either needing to be fiddled with or putting up with a too tight strap. At first I thought the strap length was ridiculously too long and then I realised it's that length to allow it to left threaded through the D-Rings and just loosened to remove the helmet.

I'm a speccy-twat these days, the ventilation is good enough to not require a pin-lock (something I have on both my System IV & V).

I have also discovered that you can wear goggles and still lower the visor which will close fully. Very handy as it's a bit like tear-offs, once the visor is coated with crap you can raise it and still have clean eye protection.

Less positive: The padding on the inside of the chin-bar has just come adrift (I'll just stick back with something better than the original glue).

I prefer either of the System helmets in cold weather.

Fitting autocom ear-pieces was as fiddly as System IV.

I do experience some buffeting but this seems to be when following large vans at or above 70 mph.

The obvious drawbacks of any fixed full face helmet applies.

IMO, a great alternative to the Tour-X if you have a BMW shaped head but not an all year helmet.

Very pleased with mine.
