This morning I started out to meet other folks in the 'Scotland Section' for a run to Glenshee.

Go 6 miles down the road when the bike suddenly died:

1150 GS 2002 ABS/Servo model

Text 'Voyager' to go on without me and waited for RAC man to come.

Tests revealed that:
1. Starter motor works but bike fails to start
2. No spark at plugs
3. Initial 12V reading to injectors on switching on ignition but nothing when starter pressed
4. Fuel pump working and fuel flowing
5. Bike doesn't have an immobiliser

Now that I have the bike home, my default position is to have it trailered to the dealers but thought that the knowlegde base here might suggest further tests etc before then.

All help gratefully received

Cheers

That wouldn't explain the failure of an electric signal to the injectors and no spark at the plugs.

It sounds like a hall sender unit ( electronic ignition trigger unit) thats failed.

Does it start again when the engine cools down ?

Sidestand cut out switch malfunction?

That way you won't break down 6 miles from home, you'll be able to pop indoors and phone the homestart bit of your breakdown cover.;) As it willl have broken in the garage.

No - the bike remains dead (v. cold now). Rechecked spark etc and still the same. I have removed the tank now and the pulley cover and checked the physical appearance of the wiring for breaks from the back of the pulley to the connector and all seems fine. Are there any tests I can do with a multimeter to check whether the sender unit has failed?

Guys - thanks for all the help received so far, even from Shenzi!

Folks

Just wanted to say thanks for all your help and advice. I have received many PMs this afternoon and feel comfortable that I have now isolated the problem to a failure in the electronic ignition trigger unit. Now formulating the plan of action to get the bike back on the road.

Many thanks

Gordon

Here's a secret- don't tell anyone.

Turn on the ignition, listen to the fuel pump fire up then stop.

keep the ignition turned on, put the bike into gear.

Turn the rear wheel around very slowly.

Listen for the fuel pump to fire up again at some point while rotating the wheel.

If it doesn't fire up, the senders fecked. - Who needs a £25K diagnostic unit  :D

Now bugger off, i'm giving all my hard earned secrets away .

And finally ......for those who asked .... the problem was the electronic ignition trigger unit. Did the tests recommemded, removed the thing and both sensors were BADLY corroded, the upper one particularly so. New plate on order from Motobins

Cheers
