The above is dealer fitted. Last week in France the unit would work for half a day then switch off and then just display the opening screens and then die again.
The unit has previously worked well. (France Norway) and local.
Is this anything to do with the 1200GS software not appreciating an alian running off the back of the socket?
I can't remember when the software was last upgraded.

Can it be something in V8?
Before I visit my dealer I seem to remember reading about someone else who had troble in France.
Any comments please.

That was me in this thread http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74134

The dealer checked it out at the last service and found nothing wrong, this isn't surprising as the thing works fine at the moment. I'm monitoring the situation to see if it returns but my favourite theory is the one about dirty contacts making the can-bus system think there's a fault and shutting the power off.

My best guess is that you have dirty electrical contacts. Check the triangular shaped power 'plug' at the end of the power lead and the copper contacts on the device itself. It doesn't take much dirt to interupt a low current feed. The CAN system 'reads' the interruption as a fault and switches off at roughly 20 seconds, hence the 'on-off-on-off' pattern.

If after giving the contacts a quick brush-up the fault is still there, check the supply lead for breaks.

Have you had your bike's firmware upgraded recently?

My experiences are detailed at:

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72342

...which turned out to be due to two separate problems, one being the faulty fuel-pump controller (irrelevant to your situation) and the other appears to be a software problem caused by the recent software update.

In short: every so often the accessory power sockets get turned on/off almost randomly. That the situation I observe is *not* a "dirty contact" is verifiable because rebooting the bike usually makes a temporary fix.

Does this match your experience?

If so, welcome to the new world of Motorcycles With Bad Software.

I have a Garmin 2610 which is plumbed into the accessory socket. Since the last service I too am experiencing random cut-outs of power to the GPS. Switching the ignition off and "rebooting" the bike  cures the problem until the next random cut-out. At the moment I am working in Belgium and have arranged to take it to a local BM dealer who gave a knowing look when I questioned the effect of the last software upgrade.....

Thanks for all your responses. It is not dirty contacts! at the GPS side of things. It can't be a broken connection for it stays up the first time it is started until the first stop, then it starts doing the coming and going, the unit starts then dies. 30/40 seconds seemed to be the pattern.
I was not the only one in our group to have 'power loss' causing the GPS to switch off. Two others had the later GPS with similar happenings.
So will go for the software option.
I am concerned that the warranty runs out soon and I could be left with a dead unit.

Definitely sounds like the software problem to me. I have the same thing.

Try this: have the GPS *off* when you turn the ignition on and start the engine. Once the battery warning goes away, then start the GPS. If you stop the engine you have to turn the GPS off again, and so on. If this 'workaround' stops it from cutting out then you have the same problem I (and several others here) have seen.

There's a rumour that there's a fix on the way.
