Just got a warranty renewal notice for my 2010 GS from BMW. Noticed that BMW has contracted this out to Mondial. I asked to see the terms and conditions sent and while on hold the operator if you still needed to have the bike serviced at a BMW dealer and they said as long as BMW parts are used then this was NOT a requirement anymore. Have asked to see it in writing but any experience good or bad on Mondial?

12 month price (£100 deductible) is £310 or monthly cost is £29. While the annual policy is transferable and can be cancelled pro-rata if you make a claim you don't get any money back. However, if you do make a claim on the monthly policy there is no penalty if you do make a claim. For £30 difference (annual/monthly) well worth the difference.

Good news for the independents if this is case and bad news for the dealers.

Other than being a touch French, there is nothing wrong with Mondial at all.

I would say that they are one of (if not, the) market leaders in travel, accident, health insurance and pretty good at warranty business, too.

I would check that what the call centre monkey told you is correct. The 'old' BMW Warranty policy, underwritten by ELVIA (Mondial in another form) had this very clear restriction / obligation:

What must I do to keep the Warranty valid?

The terms and conditions of the warranty listed below must be adhered to. Failure to do so will result in the rejection of a claim or the termination of your BMW Motorrad Insured Warranty. This does not affect your statutory rights.

1. When servicing your motorcycle, failure to comply with the service schedule recommended by BMW may invalidate this warranty. All service and warranty work must be carried out by an Authorised BMW Dealer or BMW Service Authorised Workshop using only Genuine BMW Parts. Your BMW Service Booklet should be stamped, dated and detailed with the correct mileage at the time of service by the servicing dealer.

It's possible that the 'new' policy is different. But quite why BMW would allow a BMW branded and sold product to allow something to take away their (very profitable) service provision does not seem to make much business sense.

Only really small niggles such as the exhaust baffle seizing up and the computer being a little too sensitive with regard to lights turning off etc.

I'd be surprised I must say... Why let valuable servicing fees vanish, then meet the cost of the warranty repair? OK, I'll accept that it's the insurer not BMW (though they may contribute, depending on the relationship) who picks up the warranty tab, and pays BMW for doing the work. It seems bizarre.

It really seems that BMW are missing a trick, or being quite generous, straight off the bat... which is rare.

What doesn't make sense either is that if the policy allows bods to have the bike serviced outside of BMW, where it's cheaper. Why wouldn't they allow the same bod to have the warranty work done outside of BMW too, saving costs for the insurer?

All with a BMW label on the booklet. It looks very odd.... but so does life.

"‘’In order to keep the policy valid, all service work must be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s service schedule and specifications as proof of service may be requested when making a claim’’.

Phoned the bloke again and asked to confirm in writing "Am I able to get the biked serviced anywhere provided they use BMW parts?"

Call centre dude: "Yes. But we are not able to confirm that in writing. BMW has to do that."

NLC : "Why can't you confirm that in writing if your phones are recorded for our mutual protection and that this statement has formed the basis of me taking the insurance contract out with you?"

Call centre dude: "Because that is what my manager told me. He will phone you back shortly."

It's being marketed by BMW, acting as a broker of some description or other, I assume....

So the OP can get his bike serviced outside of a BMW dealership and still maintain his extended warranty insurance with Mondial.

That's what they have said but I still want it in black and white. The muppets have been thrown into a tail spin because the terms have changed last week but they don't have the new document to send out. The reason for the change is "they have responded to customer demand that servicing the bike at a BMW dealer was a bit inconvenient due to distances in some cases". To be clear all warranty work still must be done at a dealer. My preference is to use an independent as a second set of eyes, opinion and generally better value and service. Discussing the claims procedure it does seem that they want you to pay for everything in advance and then claim.

Mondial are I guess bringing it into line with their other products. I believe Aprilia's works the same way, for instance.... cough up first and then recover.

Thinking about it again, I suspect that BMW may well know that the owners of the bulk of vehicles enjoying BMW branded Extended Warranty insurance will have their bike serviced at a BMW dealership, irrespective. So, the loss of your bike for instance will not make a huge difference.

By the time the bike is more than say five years old it will probably have been sold on at least once or twice, the latest owner probably won't buy extended warranty anyway.

Just like at the vets ........ the thing is you have to have the money either sat in your account or available to spend via a credit card before you can claim it back

As said in the earlier post the terms and conditions have changed this week and this is what we are trying to clarify as Mondial is the new underwriter of the policy.

Does in accordance with the manufacturers service schedule and specifications mean that it needs to happen at a dealer or any garage is the million pound question.
