just made a bid on a BMW large softbag 2 on fleabay, anybody got one? they look just the job for a short trip, are they stable? because they look huge:beerjug:

Rock solid. I like it, built in carry handles, shoulder strap and doesn't collapse when empty. Use it on any bike. No worrying about not locking it either!

I do like BMWs soft luggage range.

Doesn't let in water IME either.

For a short trip, the smaller soft bag may be enough, depends on your requirements for a 'short trip' :-)

I have the larger one coming in the post, bought from the forum here and just picked up the smaller one as I have uses for both.

I'm impressed at the quality and ease of use on the small one so far. The bigger will be great for touring and although I love my Kriega stuff, this was around cheaper here so I decided to go with it.

I have way too many bags but they all fit a niche, I think I'm a bag whore.

We have used both the large and small BMW soft bags on various BMW's including the new GS. They are waterproof, stable and durable. The real bonus for us is the weight reduction over hard luggage though.
Cheers.

I was looking at one of these when I was ordering my LC on Thursday, does the curved bottom fit the new GS? I've ordered a topbox and want a bag to go on the rear seat, but the grab rails seem too wide for the shape of the bottom of the bag. Is it only for the rear plate instead of the topbox?

I picked up my small softbag today, so will get some pics fitted to the LC over the next few days:thumby:

post em up:beerjug: because ive just bought the small softbag 2 off ebay just now:thumby:

Yes, the grab rails are too wide for the bottom of the big softbag. It is made to go on the rear luggage rack, with straps underneath to hold it in place, with some straps going forward to secure it. But it is a great bag, albeit a bit on the cumbersome side when hanging from the shoulder strap.

Thanks Hammam, makes sense, looks like a roll bag is needed then.
And will you be able to swing your right leg over it to get on board? I know I couldn't. But I am on the very far side of 60. :rob Yes, I could step on the left peg, but I don't like that idea. Ever since I had a total power failure at 100 kmh in a tunnel, with eighteen-wheelers howling all around me, that was due to a broken safety switch in the side stand, I have been wary of putting too much strain on the stand.

Got one for free this morning from the Bmw dealer, all customers which has bought and never got their Varios get one for free.
You can choose between 2 models.
No one knowes when the varios wil be here.
Tankbags will be aviable in week 23. end of May.

I now have both the large and small version of the bag, I already have a roll dry bag and kriega stuff so I'm able to sort whatever I need.

Both bags serve a purpose of course and I found the large one secondhand here so it gives me both options. My overall impression is the quality and function are way above what I was expecting actually and are way ahead of the top box which I don't like.

Would have said, getting your leg over with anything on the back (snigger) is an exercise in trying to make sure no one is watching and then doing some mad hop and finally scuffing, kicking and cursing your way onto the bike.

I found with a Harley loaded up that perversely, trying to mount from the other side (snigger) helped a lot, the angle made for a better entry. I may try going at it from the other way.

I'll get my coat...

I've had a standard GS with varios and a GSA with alloys. I use the panniers so little I haven't ordered any for the LC. Last trip round Wales I left the panniers at home, stuck a bag on the rear seat and used the topbox for bits and pieces.
Touring Scotland in May and 2x2night stops means if I had panniers I'd be carting them in to the hotel room.
Yes getting it up and over can be a struggle at my age with a bag on the seat, but I married her! :clap

Much lighter than a top box, rock solid, and probably more comfortable for a pillion (will get the final verdict from the wife on our next day trip:D). Oh, and a quarter of the price of a top box!:rob

I agree 100% about the softbag - I use the band on the bottom to hook it onto the rack and then use the supplied straps down to the sub-frame tubes to hold it in place. It looks good on the LC too :D

I have just posted one in the 'for sale' forum. Great bit of kit but I have recently had some hard panniers fitted.

Have previously had it on both my 12GSA and my 800GS. Fits pretty much anything with a luggage rack.

On the LC, I've used the small straps, and looped them through the pannier mounts:beerjug:

I like the way BMW give you three sets of straps, labelled short medium and long as if we couldn't work that out :D but it does give you a gazillion ways of attaching the bag :thumb I couldn't use the pannier mounts because I want to use it along with the panniers - will give the girlfriend a backrest too when it is stuffed with her clothes :D
