BMW NAVIGATOR V LAUNCHED !

Of course they've announced a new one today. It was inevitable.

I ordered my GSA with 'Free' Nav IV 2 days ago. :eek

Now that you have got the hang of moving (and deleting) posts, why not move this thread to the GPS section, as it's not particular to 1200GS motorcycles and it's about as technical as a boiled egg....

Moved Richard. ;)

History is that the BMW Nav is based upon an existing Garmin unit, yet there is no Garmin MOTORCYCLE unit that I can find on their site with an 800 x 480 screen size. I find various Nuvi models that all have fewer features and are not waterproof as far as I can tell.

Can anyone shed any light on what this unit is based upon?

Perhaps not but I wouldn't have a Nav IV now, if it had cost me that. Although, I do remember paying £580 + VAT in Makro for my Streetpilot III a good many years ago.

And they were about £1100 when first released in 2001/2.

As bods get really distressed when a petrol station closes but is still shown on the device... I can hardly wait for the howls of outrage and upset when tossers cannot deal with:

(a) The church being repainted in green

(b) The church being converted into a Starbucks

(c) Being unable to recognise a church, even if it jumped up and kicked them in the bollocks

:jes:jes:jes

Seems it's another first... Usually the BMW unit followed the Garmin unit by several months...

Now it seems they are anticipating it by ????

Navigator V

Totally oblivious to this thread and the news that there was a new Sat Nav out I dropped into my local dealer on Saturday to buy the Navigator IV and was delighted to hear that not only was there a newer version out but that they had one in stock ready to go.
Stuck it on the bike (it fits the TE housing) and used it all weekend. A great bit of kit BUT BEWARE
I put it in the cradle this morning, pushed the levers to the lock position, turned the key in the lock and then set off. 100 yds down the road it popped out and slithered down the road.
It appears that you can do all the above but clearly it is possible that it sits in just the wrong position fooling you visually and the locking system too. So if you do buy one make sure that once you put it in the cradle you give it a good shake to make sure it really is in situ.

Real Bikers...

Pish posh, I did a good few years working as a despatch rider, Satellite navigation for motorcycles in the early 90's was a fantasy. It was maps all the way and we carried them. When you got to the town you didn't know you stopped at a filling station and looked at the one they kept behind the counter.

I've had a quest 1 and a now a Navigator IV.

I look at maps for pleasure now. Happy days.

Real bikers can read maps and those who can't should learn, they won't regret it.

Those that can't learn shouldn't be let out of the house without a grown up - let alone ride a motorcycle. ;)

Not sure where this "us" and "them" attitude comes from! Satnavs and maps are not mutually exclusive! When you're leaving the middle of a big town centre and you've worked out from your map that you want to be on the B4123 to Digereedoo then the satnav comes into it's own to steer you through all the one way systems and roadworks to get you out of town and onto your selected routes. Best of both worlds. Simples.

Can you post a piture of it on the bike, so we can get an idea of the size :thumb2

No lack of teenagers - got three of the little bloodsuckers but one who can help? That's the tricky part. I guess I'll have to resort to bribery - that normally works.:natter
