I cannot remember as it's years ago - but I'm just getting my R100RS out of storage.

I remember it was stuck in 4th gear, (I think that it's 4th gear), when I put it in my mate's Barn - I seem to remember it's a 50 pence spring that needs replacing - (Steptoe will know).

Can anyone help me as to the problem and remedy?

Its a gearbox out and Strip / repair @BillN

Its to do with the selector quadrant and having it spring back to its rest position be ready to roll the shift mechanism up or down as you chose

When the spring breaks the dog just goes floppy and won't pick up the mechanism

Thanks Jay, just what I needed, (well not really if you know what I mean) .......... Bike has only done less than 5,000 miles and has been dry stored most of it's life

I left it in the UK when we moved to France and only now I have space for it ......... it's dusty but has been covered for 10+ years in a dry warehouse and I kept the tank with me - as they say the colour combo is "1 of 200"...... registered in August 1978

It is still possible to change gear with a broken selector return/detent spring.

You need to turn the bike upside down and you can change gear :D

That looks superb. Motorsport quite a rare bike.

Yes .... my 1969 R100RS stuck in second gear while in Germany. Tiny return spring in the gearbox. Gearbox out and a total strip down required :blast

In an effort to be helpful, you can get the gearbox out and on the bench in under 2 hours; with the correct tools/spares the repair is about another 2 hours. Then it would be another 2 hours to refit and enjoy.

If you found anything untoward while you were in there, add extra time and dosh.

You're forgetting one important ingredient: The know how......

<. Goes to get stopwatch ready….
Steptoe verses gelanderstasse……. Gentlemen, Get ya bikes n tools ready…… on your marks, get set, go…..

This would be a great spectator sport ; airhead beemer gearbox stripping…..

( I’m not going to compete, as a mere novice, having only once ever taken a gearbox out of an airhead….my time would be in the multiple hours and several cups of tea whilst I read up on what to do next…)

I agree with Steptoe - 45 mins is ‘under 2 hours’. Although the quickest I have had the gearbox out and opened the lid is 1hr 15mins.
