I spent three or four months looking for “My perfect for me” GSA to replace an aging R1200GS and F800GS. My requirements- Late HEX-head Twin Cam without ABS or ESA. It took a while but my old mate from this parish (Wrighty) found this for sale in his local BMW Motorrad dealer in Plymouth. A few days later I was on the train from Taunton to collect it….

As requested a new top-box and rack were fitted at my cost. Panniers were subsequently sourced from this Parish.
Got changed and headed off across Dartmoor to Princetown. Glorious sunny day! Love the lazy torque of the Boxer twin and low C of G compared to the F800. Bend Swinging here we go!

2/12/17 Santa on a Bike Charity Ride. Annie and I ride to Bideford. Mr T sees us off from the Red Cap Café. Afterwards we meet Jim Byran and Wrighty (both of this parish), at the YuleTide ABR Christmas Bash.
9/12/17 16324m. Ian fits new rear to loose rim. Replaced Bridgestone A40 with Michelin Anakee3 £102

Removed 44mm OEM Downpipes and fitted Remus Stainless Steel 48mm pipes without Cat. Exhaust power valve flap refitted. Exhaust studs 21NM. Applied copper-ease grease. O2 sensor 45NM 22mm spanner. Bit more fiddley compared to my 2005 R1200GS. There is a protective cover underneath the cylinder heads- 3x bolts to remove. Also the aluminium head protection. 4 covers in all! Also removed the black Cymarc Alternator cover to remove downpipes. Applied ACF50 grease to all 4 bolts on Cymarc cover.
Went to start bike but the battery was almost flat, barely able to turn the motor over. Put on Optimate
Think the serrated footrests have punctured the sole of my left Altberg boot through Vibram badge- repaired using instant gasket. Will send off to be re-soled as they have been in service for over 5 years.
24/1/18 Adjusted exhaust joint to silencer connection. Improved quietness.
25/1/18 16648m Ocean installed a new battery due to the recent starting problem. They were not going to do it initially FOC because the battery is not covered under the 2 year warranty. However I reminded Chris Stone 9Service Manager) of the poor PDI which was carried out prior to my purchase in Oct 2017. The O/S fog light was not working, even though I pointed it out on my test ride before purchase. I used the above example that the PDI had not been completed properly and the marginal battery performance not picked on the PDI. Eventually they agreed after a call to BMW UK Customer Service.
26/1/18 16748m Adjusted gear change to better fit the Haix boots. Torx E8 required. Removed headlight unit to recover the side light led bulb, which had fallen into the light.
Plugged in my GS911- reported fault with Exhaust Valve- possibly seized. Bill@Ocean booked me in 14/3/18

28/4/18 18301 Puncture on F800GS at Wivy. AA recovered. Swapped bikes. Filled up GSA 340 miles = 51mpg. Rode to Rockford inn for supper and a stroll on the East Lynn river. Annie fell asleep on the back home.

29/5/18 19205m Packed GSA with camping gear using ALPKIT 100 litre kit bag to hold all our gear including Annie’s Redverz Atakama tent. She loves her tents, bit of a tent tart with a couple Hillebergs left at home for this trip as we need the space of the Atakama!
Departed Taunton 0620 and arrived Red Squirrel Campsite in Glenmidge!!! 1400 with one stop Tebay services M6. Excellent Lamb burger on a sweltering hot day. Turned off Gretna Green and re-fuelled. Could have made it to Dumfries on one tank…just! Stayed at Glenmidge for 7 days and toured visiting Castle Douglas, Newton Stewart, Wigtown, Little Ross, New Galloway, Auloggirth. Rode a long forest track called Carrick Forest Drive with fine views and lakes 10 miles long, Glentrool Forest. Topped up oil.
6/6/18 We left Scotland and headed to Banbury to visit my Mum. Overnighted and then headed off to Wales- Llandow Race Circuit to join South West Bikers track day- took the edges off the tyres. Met Mark Ian and Simon. Then we headed back to Somerset the long way over the Brecon Beacons to avoid Friday trafficJ
23/24 June Joined Wrighty and Corky on a ride to Bodennick near Fowy, Cornwall for a camping session. Great back lanes but no off road due to Corky still recovering from shoulder surgery.

6/7/18 Rode to Banbury via Chippenham, with camping gear. Overnight at Mum’s then on to Sue’s Barlby near Selby YORKS. Took back roads via Croperdy eventually leading to Ruby join M1 J20
8/7/18 Sue (on her F650) and I head off to the North York Moors and explore Rosedale. Have a picnic.
9/7/18 Sue is working so I head off to explore some green roads, notable Rudland Rigg. Take another lane and sxplore ending up on another unpaved road and riding through the first ford- walked it first to be to be sure to be sure!! Lamb@ The lion inn
10/7/18 Met up with Jim Bryan (KTM690 Rally) and Wrighty (CCM404DS) @Gillamoor ready to ride the Rudland Rigg again. Jim forgot the key for his 690 so I sent him back on my GSA 120 mile round trip with traffic due to the Great Yorkshire show causing him to be delayed. I did not known how much I would lean on this experience. For the joy it gave me over the coming months and supported my mental health.
8/3/20 Two day trip Great Western Trail. Rode to Treyarnon Bay from Oki. Camped at YHA, Very windy night in Coleman Phad which stayed up just, losing one guy rope. 50mph winds. Used upturned picnic tables to form a wind break. Rode back and visited Corky. Avoided Chiliton and Warleggon trail.
280 miles of gentle trails, carefully pre walked and chosen, the suspect ones! Great fun riding solo on this uber flexible GS Adventure.

1/1/22 New Years Day Went for a ride with Naomi to Widmouth Bay Millock Haven and Crackington Haven. 190 miles, Sat on the beach watching the waves crashing on to the shore. All was good and wonderful in these precious moment.

Very wet outward ride into Wales.

Rear tyre puncture on leaving Rhayder. Plugged and repaired although the rubber glue had vaporised in new unopened tube, but luckily Derek had a new unused cycle repair kit. Thanks mateJ

Gearbox oil clean but slightly dark. Rear Diff slightly milky.
Tightened NS fog light engine bar bolt. Reset service to 48000m or 23/7/23 whichever arrives sooner

Sunday Steve H lead across Yorkshire Dales Kirkby Stephens, Hawes 120mi. Monday Sue and I ride to Tan Hill etc. After all this intensive sidewall action the rear wild is past its best. Departed 1600, heading towards Bodmin on lanes. Stopped at lake/reservoir. Watch a hilarious spectacle as mother and daughter paddle across the lake in a canoe.

With a big splash the canoe capsizes and both fall in. Sounds of hysterical laughter roll across the lake to my ears. Then…
“ Mum, You fucking idiot….”
Top entertainment, so I got out the Jetboil and made a brew with the Aeropress.
Headed north to St Breward, Roughtor, Launceston, Oki and home.

Fault find no output from Alternator. Removed alt, one winding is open circuit. Unable to find a second-hand one in UK or Europe. Tried USA. No joy Unable to find a used one at a reasonable price. Sherlock wants £600 for a second-hand one! He can “do one”!!
Cotswold Motorrad will supply on including delivery for £700 with 2 year warranty.

I did not known how much I would lean on this experience. For the joy it gave me over the coming months and supported my mental health.
8/3/20 Two day trip Great Western Trail. Rode to Treyarnon Bay from Oki. Camped at YHA, Very windy night in Coleman Phad which stayed up just, losing one guy rope. 50mph winds. Used upturned picnic tables to form a wind break. Rode back and visited Corky. Avoided Chiliton and Warleggon trail.
280 miles of gentle trails, carefully pre walked and chosen, the suspect ones! Great fun riding solo on this uber flexible GS Adventure.

1/1/22 New Years Day Went for a ride with Naomi to Widmouth Bay Millock Haven and Crackington Haven. 190 miles, Sat on the beach watching the waves crashing on to the shore. All was good and wonderful in these precious moment.

Very wet outward ride into Wales.

Rear tyre puncture on leaving Rhayder. Plugged and repaired although the rubber glue had vaporised in new unopened tube, but luckily Derek had a new unused cycle repair kit. Thanks mateJ

Gearbox oil clean but slightly dark. Rear Diff slightly milky.
Tightened NS fog light engine bar bolt. Reset service to 48000m or 23/7/23 whichever arrives sooner

Easter 2022 1108 miles- Sue arranged accommodation for BM group in the Coach house in Middleton in Teesdale. I lead from Squires to Middleton. Steve leads on Saturday ride heading north to Kielder Forest lake and castle and on to Scottish Borders 170mi zig zag across Hadrian’s Wall. Sunday Steve H lead across Yorkshire Dales Kirkby Stephens, Hawes 120mi. Monday Sue and I ride to Tan Hill etc. After all this intensive sidewall action the rear wild is past its best. 15/5/22 Started stripping rear sub-frame in prep for re-spray to address the corrosion. Rubbed down and de-greased using Hammerite thinners. Painted with 6 coats of Hammerite Satin Black.

Departed 1600, heading towards Bodmin on lanes. Stopped at lake/reservoir. Watch a hilarious spectacle as mother and daughter paddle across the lake in a canoe.

With a big splash the canoe capsizes and both fall in. Sounds of hysterical laughter roll across the lake to my ears. Then…
“ Mum, You fucking idiot….”
Top entertainment, so I got out the Jetboil and made a brew with the Aeropress.
Headed north to St Breward, Roughtor, Launceston, Oki and home.

No Charge light on!
Fault find no output from Alternator. Removed alt, one winding is open circuit. Unable to find a second-hand one in UK or Europe. Tried USA. No joy Unable to find a used one at a reasonable price. Sherlock wants £600 for a second-hand one! He can “do one”!!
Cotswold Motorrad will supply on including delivery for £700 with 2 year warranty.
