BMW R65

If you enjoy a blast on a R1/Suzuki GSX1000, if you enjoy a blast on a 50cc scoot then buy that bike.you will grow to love it,if you trust it.It is trustworthy.I did many more miles on mine than I have on my GSA 1150 and never had totally unexpected problems.Ive had as many with my GS that I didnt expect.If you buy it and hate it,blame me.I must point I am biased.:beerjug: Ps dont let your heart hold your wallet when it comes to buying price.If you pay too much you will already be pissed off.That gives the poor bike a hurdle to leap before it gets chance to make you love it!
 
The bike in your photo has a 12-spoked front wheel. There was a recall on the one originally fitted on my R100RS back in 1982 (or soon after) as they had some of the spokes cracking by the hub, it was replaced with the 10-spoked wheel. Whether the wheels fitted to the R45/R65 were the same and subject to the recall I don't know.

Centre stands wear, along with the stand lugs on the frame.

Bike ends up dropping too far back when it's on the main stand and you can't get it off :D

I've put a monolever main stand on my R65.

There were two models of R45, one was even lower powered than standard for the german learner market, make sure it's a genuine GB bike and not one of those.

All in all, I've decided to pass on this bike, unless he'll accept a silly offer which will at least allow me to flog it without any loss. The price he's asking seems reasonable enough (compared to a huge sample of two recently sold bikes) but that's without an MOT and it does need a couple of visible bits doing. That's without worrying about the dropped/burnt out valves, the wheels in imminent danger of cracking, the centrestand lugs, the snail's pace, the woeful mpg...

Jeez, he should be paying me to take it away. :D

They were the 19 inch cast wheels. The R45/65 has the 18 inch trouble free versions .
 
We had them as an intermediate bike on the Cheshire Police advanced courses, had to do a week on them. although not in the league of the 80's you could actually wind them up till they screamed. On my assesment at the end of the week the C/I in the following Granada complained that I pissed orff and left them...... mind you he did say that they could hear me.:D:D
 
I fear I may have confused a few people - despite the title, the bike in question is an R45. From what I read, I doubt even Pastyman could lose a Granada on one of those. :D

Glacial speed might apply to the R45 as much as the Mod...:augie

Pastyman, we also had them with that dreadful full fairing fitted...I think they dissappeared under the layers of dust in the driving school as they never moved out of there !!:D

Junk the fairing and it'll look great and go better too.


Now Proff, What exatcly did you do to convert the 45 to a 65? Was it simply a piston, barrel and head swap?

Ours never had fairings, just the leg shields.

You scousers probably got jealous seeing ours and knicked some of your own from somewhere:aidan

In the early ninties I once went all the way up to an auction in Mold, north wales for some police bikes in an auction. Bikes were registered to the superintendent of colwyn bay.

A few R80 and R100, plus 2 R45. Both the R45's had less than 5K miles on the clock and looked like new. IIRC they made about £600.
