BMW Rally 3 Suit leaks like a sive!

I'm considering buying a rally 3 suit. Can I get a simple response.......

In practice, day long soaking, Is the liner actually water proof? Yes or no.

Yes - well, my MkII is.

It's now seven years old, has done thousands of miles all over Europe and Africa and has been off roaded, a lot - still 100% waterproof.

One proviso is that in very cold and wet weather I chuck a cheap DPM Gortex jacket over the top which helps keep me warm as an extra wind breaker layer and because it stops the outer jacket getting wet. I don't use the DPM jacket to keep dry as, already stated, the Rally suit does the job on that score.

Yes, they are a 'twat' jacket but I don't give a toss about that, they work perfectly for me and if mine ever wears out I'll replace it with the same/similar

I think you're referring to 'reassuringly expensive'

two things:

you can't measure how good a quality something is really (yes I know you may crash, but you wont do it again in a different suit, to compare will you?) - but you can measure how cold and wet your bollocks get!

AND

The thought of spending nigh on a grand on just the suit and having to put on an over jacket to keep a bit warmer and possibly drier is... well...

I think you're referring to 'reassuringly expensive'

I have to justify it to myself somehow

Anyway, it doesn't have to be expensive - due to the nature of the 'twat' suit they often come up on eBay 'cos the owner has changed the colour of his/her bike or some such other stoopid reason. I got mine, as new nick, for half the new WMB price off eBay. Given the quality of the kit that is a bargain

PS I still have my 'original' Tuareg jacket for those times when I want to look like an uber cool, I was riding adventure bikes before you lot, ruffty tuffty biker and whilst it's very tatty round the edges it's still going strong after 10 years but it's nowhere near as tough as the WMB offering

I think you should read Mutters earlier post about the inherent compromises of different types of jacket

Here you go, check out the picture below, that was only -5'C, three days later and we hit -15'C in central France

And like many here we have all ridden in minus figures for many miles ( although saying that, it was -8 my coldest, but that was daytime not night time figures)

couldnt care less about the phorensics of it all


After years of bike racing I learnt that the key is in the base layers, with a very very weather resistant outer layer. You will never be too hot, too cold, too sweaty, too wet...

In all of the above ...... it is called a Rally suite for a reason.

The reason is competition events.
