BMW RECALLS R & K SERIES BIKES PRODUCED BETYWEEN 2003 - 2011

Just looking at that picture and it "looks weak by design". The outer edge where the cracks form are thinner than the sides and narrow for the bolt hole size. Hard to tell from a picture but it would be interesting to see the old overlaid on top of the new to see the difference.

Who's at fault

Taken from Visor down article
"Based on ongoing quality analyses, it was found that in the case of incorrectly carried-out maintenance work excessive torque may be applied to the brake disk bolts or to the nuts when changing wheels, contrary to the values specified in the BMW Motorrad repair instructions or operating instructions."

BMW are supposed to have said both issues are caused by over tightening (or the over tightening is mention) and if your bike has only been maintained and worked on by a BMW approved dealer then surely the dealer should be under some form of scrutiny by BMW as this is a safety issue.
Does this then mean mechanic at the dealers is the reprimanded or fired.

If you have had this part replaced in the past at said dealer, then the dealer should be refunding you all the costs.

I personally believe that this is a component issue and their are some excellent mechanics out there who have had/found this problem with bikes they maintain ( since new) and do they work by the book . ( I know there are some bad mechanics out there)

Some interesting reading on this link.

I took a look at my bike today and the rotor and wheel flange lugs can be seen well through the wheel.

The wheel bolt flange can be seen better from the rotor side.

Do you do all you maintain your own bike or dealer ?

It does look like a strange place to save weight. The wheel is a solid old lump yet it's bolted to this chopped away little flange. I'm sure the wheel could have lost that amount of metal & not even notice.

Are those threads inserts or is the alloy itself threaded?

The flange on my 2010 gsa is steel, the ones on my previous gsa 06 and 08 were alloy. Is it only the alloy ones that are failing or are the steel one's also susceptible?

My 2011 gsa has the later type of flange BUT according to the dealer it is still subject to the recall

Kritou- This is my own bike not one of the fleet of blood bikes. I do my own maintenance but the only maintenance on this part is to remove a wheel which anyone should be able to do as not everyone will go to a BMW dealer for tyres to have a wheel removed 'properly', if they do they have more money than sense. Besides that, there is no need to touch the disc bolts unless you are replacing the disc for some reason. I have never touched the disc so this failure is a component one and is nothing to do with maintenance.

I have replaced mine now with a steel one which I believe was fitted to bikes post 2008 which makes the recall interesting as this post 2008 part was to 'quietly solve' the issue. Same as BMW did when they changed the 1200 pinnion bearing size around 2007-2008 when final drives kept failing. Strange how they aren't recalling those? That's because all the faulty ones have probably been fixed at least twice by now.

I had mine replaced 2 years ago by Battersea BMW (they replaced the whole final drive) on my 2004GS free of charge.

My tyre fitter (whose brother worked at Battersea BMW and had warned him to look out for the cracked flange) noticed the crack and sent me off the Battersea.

My thoughts are the threads on either the wheel nuts or the flange should fail before the cracking happens. If you overtighten the wheelnut on your car it will be the threads that fails.

I raised this issue with my BMW agent years ago, yet bugger all was done about it. I had to buy my own replacement flange as they wouldn't cover it as a failed component outside warranty.

My guess is that somebody somewhere has got hurt (probably a Yank), and they are finally sorting it under duress.
