My 1200 GS is approaching four years old and I am debating ditching the local BMW dealer Hursts Belfast for a local specialist in BMWs. I am probably going to kepp the bike for the foreseeable future and I'd appreciate anybody else's thoughts on what I should do.

Thanks

I think BMW main dealer service is a waste of money.

Go for you independent service.

I'd rather see a full service book stamped up by an indie company than a sparsely stamped book by BMW.

If you're keeping it for a long time then why not do it yourself? There's plenty of guides/HOWTOs on here, ADVRider and the internet in general. There's even a comprehensive DVD available.

Hardly a fair comparison, full against sparsely. :augie

My point is that I know of people who have skimped on servicing as the BMW costs are high and hard to afford.

I rather see a bike serviced by an indie than not serviced by BMW because of cost.

My last bike, a 1200GS was 'out of warranty' too and I opted for non BMW servicing in the form of DIY for basic stuff and if anything specialist needed done was going to go for BMW or indie.

Problem is, I traded the bike in for an 07 RT with 12k on the clock and following a good clean up which the previous owner was averse to, the only fault I could find was a corroded front engine cover. My GS had the same part replaced FOC by BMW when it was within warranty and I had heard that out of warranty, BMW may cover the cost of the item if the customer paid the labour, so I went to John Clark Aberdeen to check it out.

As the BMW had a full BMW service history, BMW paid for parts and labour, even although the bike was out of warranty!!

My initial thought were.....must get the bike serviced at BMW, maybe worth the extra cash?? Who knows?

The extra irony is that John Clark Aberdeen no longer sell motorcycles cos they make more money selling minis and needed the space in the showroom!!

They only have one bike mechanic and will only continue servicing and repairing bikes as long as he is there!! And theres more, the tecnician Craig Stewart, is a top bloke who takes time to speak to you and is one of only three BMW technicians in the UK to pass the BMW Motorrad ATA Master Technician course, the highest technical grade in the UK.

If I was having to decide which bike to buy out of two, one had a full main dealer service history, and the other had been serviced by an independent, I would chooose the one with a main dealer service history every time, unless of course, the one without the main dealer service history was alot cheaper...

Just had a quote for carying out an 18K service, MOT and loan bike from NOG £463.48p  spoke to the service dept who advised me as the bike is 5 years old brake fluid, gear box oil rear axle oil needs to be changed and that alone is nearly £180.00 alone!
Is there an independent guy in the Aylesbury area?

Depends if it`s a good indie, who`s to say the main dealer servicing wasn`t done by the work experience lad?

All jobs you can do yourself with a little work. And a lot less cost.
Gearbox and FD oil is easy, just drain & fill.
ABS brake, check out the pictral walk through guide written by Jim Von Baden.

costley!!!!!

Travelled to Mototech in your neck of the woods for service and tyres and found the service competent and competively priced. Recommended:aidan

How about Steve Grover (Motoscot)? He is in Caddington near Luton so should be within easy reach for you. He is a BMW master technician and worked for Slocombes for 21 years before setting up on his own. I have had a couple of jobs done by him and he is excellent.

This also is a recommendation for Steve Grover (Motoscot) BMW master technician ex long time Slocombes.
He is in Caddington other side Luton just off A5. He did my last service and he did an excellent job.

I have now had the service from Mototech and I couldn't recommend them highly enough. Better service; nicer people and a better price.

It was so much nicer to give my money to a decent couple rather than a faceless company.

For me finding out that they are Christians was a bonus and a fact that should appeal to all of you looking for a fair deal from straight people.
