dosnt fairy have salt in it? i was looking at my, im almost scared to mention the word, engine plate thingy, and it seams to of had an atack of herpes over the winter! i then looked at the hub thingy where i can only liken it to a metalic form of athletes foot,, but i still think i could ride to where ever over what ever without a problem. made a mental note 2 buy some acf 50!

i don't use any "specialist" products... just warm soapy water. Normally a bit of fairy etc.

As David says there lies your problem. Go to your local dealer and ask for some castrol green tec use that when cleaning your bike.

That is the worst stuff you can use . For the past 3-4 years I used Muck Off ( wash and after wash oil ),never had any rust problems on any of the 3 RT I had .
Howard Godolphin is your man at BMW UK .Ace guy . Had a R850R , where the oil check window is ,there was corrosion . BMW replaced the whole front bloc and it was out of warranty . He was the man who arranged for the work to be done .

There is definitely loads of salt in washing-up liquid - should not be used for washing peds. Great for washing pots though!

fairy does contain salt. funny though, that before that was pointed out to me, i used to wash bikes with it for 20 years or so & never had any rust problems :nenau

i think the worst thing about using washing up liquid is, that it tends to take off any protective coat like polish. proper auto shampoo stuff adds it.

Thpought i'd have a check of my hole today. Found it a bit rusty around the rim :eek . On the plus side though it appears to have it's own supply of oil :blast

Question. Whats the problem with using warm water to wash your bike? I wouldn't use it if there's been a lot of salt on the road. However, I do find warm water more efficient in cleaning grime, crud etc. Bike's always cold when I do this, always with a dedicated bike cleaner.

That guy needs to get out more. He's plainly a nutter.

Then swarfega hand wipes you get from Halfords are spot on for getting oil and greese off the engine, you can fold them and use the same action you would when drying the crack of your ass to do between the fins as well:augie

Fairy lip squid and warm water… oh dear the fastest rust accelerant known to bikers, you do know BMW keep a close eye on this place don’t you?... and you've just told them that

Due to environmental reasons the paint BMW use now doesn’t provide the protection that it used to. Instead of flaming them for ‘allowing’ such a travesty as surface rust to occur, maybe your should invest in a few quality cleaning products.

By all means if the final drive or similar fails then yes expect a satisfactory resolution but a little surface rust….. come on :nenau

I think the BMW warranty is excellent. I used it 9 times successfully with my R1200GS.

Answer to yours, No problem you missed the sarcasm bit never mind.... why don't you use it if thier has been a lot of salt on the road ? it ain't gonna make a tuppence of difference if you wash it off with warm or cold ' as long as it's a good wash.. :thumb2
