Hi guys
Need some thoughts on BMW Warranty; I have a 2006 R1200GS with 10K on the clock. I bought this from South London Motorad just over a year ago when it had done just over 2000 miles. It is just out of warranty now and I am busy working through the pros and cons of buying and extension on this for another year for £350. Do any of you have a view on this for me.

Thanks

The extended warranty with BMW is an insurance policy which stipulates all servicing MUST be done by a BMW dealer. I use Warranty Direct who let you get the bike serviced at any VAT registered garage. I found them cheaper as well.

whatever you do, buy an extension... These bikes can eat through 2-3k worth of labour costs within a space of a few months...

I've used the extended warranty for the last two years and although I won't renew again, it's a good insurance against something nasty.

It's a much better option that any of the competitors in my opinion as long as your bike is serviced by the dealer. Insurance type warranties will wriggle like eels to avoid a claim and you could be out of pocket in no time. They are cheaper for a reason.......

BMW have their name on it and are generally very fair with claims:thumb

I have a ’07 R1200GS. Bought it approved used with a years warranty and during that time I had the back disk replaced twice, the stand replaced once and a bearing in the gearbox replaced. All covered by the warranty.

Renewed warranty 4 weeks ago then got the bike service. During the service it was found that the driveshaft wasn't as smooth rotating as it should be so had it replaced – over £400! Warranty picked it up…

All work has been done at a BMW dealer and there were no questions ask, they just got on with the job!

Totting up the total cost of my claims over a 14 month period and £350 seems cheap!

The £350 also include BMW assist . All work is done by a BMW mechanic. Depends so all-in-all I don't think its that bad a cost. on how much you use your bike…

Like most insurance backed products, it's a policy of indemnity, not an investment.

Good value if your claim more than the premium and the excess in a year. Less good value if you do not.

Consider that a new final drive will set you back about a grand. If that goes a new one is roughly three years worth extended warranty premium, taking the excess into account, too.

If you can afford not to buy it and nothing goes wrong, you will win. If you can't and the bike goes wrong, you may well lose.

Your choice. Nobody here can tell you one way or another. All they can say is that they think it's cheap (or expensive), that dealers are expensive (or cheap), that they have (or have not) bought it or have (or have not) claimed, that it includes UK / European recovery.

If you can't decide. Toss a coin. It's as good as any other way to decide.

if you don't buy the extension, Merphy's law dictates that you will suffer an expensive failure right after.

So buy it in order for the bike to work perfectly.

Sleep eazzzy

Just do it!!

Peace of mind, just in case that FD goes or gearbox oil seal or fuel pump controller or off side valve stem or LH indicator or ignition coils or .....

You just never know!

just do it for sure

Resale value????

it will also keep your resale value up.

So will parking the bike in an air conditioned shed & never taking it out, but one does not (generally) buy a bike for that reason.

Around 25 years ago, a friend bought a Lada Samara. A mutual friend of his, who was a local Ford dealer, berated him, telling him the Lada would be worth nothing in 3 years when he went to trade it in. He should have bought a Fiesta.

My colleague agreed on the 3 year valuation, and asked him a pertinent question, namely:

How much will a 3 year old Fiesta be worth with 145,000 miles on it? The answer, reluctantly given was - nothing!
He then asked, so how much will I save?

What relationship do you have with your BMW agent? If you are on good terms as a regular customer, you stand a much better chance of them going out on a limb with BWM for you should a claim be necessary:-

I have recently felt the vibe that BWM might be less keen than they once were to uphold claims (probably due to the recession hitting the automotive sector very hard), though my dealer recently got my worn final drive replaced under warranty rather than rebuilt with new bearings due to the tiniest onset of corrosion on the housing. I suspect the dealer had to argue the case on my behalf, hence why I ask how often you support your local BWM dealership.

IMO a formal warranty is just the paperwork that allows a good customer to be looked after or not depending on how good a customer they are. ;)

I would go for it - you cover 8k a year - sounds like good value. My last bike was reliable for the first 12k miles and then started to go wrong - I extended the warranty for 2 years and claimed several times (including a final drive and wiring loom) - would have cost me a fortune without. Given your current mileage and usage I would get it. If you only averaged a couple of k a year it might not be worth it.

Warrentee

Just renewed mine for the second year , had last year a final drive seal go and was replaced along with a new clutch ( didnt need one but my dealer said he would change it as it may have oil on it ). Personally i think i saved money and above all have peice of mind at any time ,at home or abroad.
Up to you really but i would not go without it and its only £310-00 a year.

:nenau

Just buy it. I have invested approx 800 euro in the two policies I have bought but the pay out has been approx 5000 euro to replace 2 front discs, one front wheel, one final drive, one tank sender unit and one brake servo unit.
If i did not have the extended warranty Im sorry to say that I would have got rid of the GS by now. Its a lottery with them if they give no trouble or financially rape you.
Money well spent in my case but as Wapping said its your choice

Extended Warranty

Just set mine up, due in October, anything for peace of mind with some of the tales of woe on here. Got about the most comprehensive coverage of parts that I've seen on any vehicle's extended warranty. The Emergency Service is also included in that £310 so I'd reckon on it being good value.:beerjug:
