BMW's R1150 GS - 20 years on ....

I’ve been watching a few of this guys videos on YouTube, he seems very worldly wise for his age, I do cringe occasionally when I see the way he treats the bike though 🙄 that’s probably just my OCD 😀 it’s great the way he seems to do his travelling on a shoe string….no sat nav….stops and looks at his phone, clutch is fooked on the GS…..it’ll be ok 😲 etc

This is honestly no joke. A few years ago I had a 1200 turn up on a breakdown truck because the gear indicator had failed. The poor soul couldn’t possibly ride his bike as he had no idea what gear it was in. The bike still started as normal with the clutch pulled in, it was simply the lack of any visual indication showing what gear the bike was in. It was his first big bike and he hadn’t long passed his test .. I was amazed the breakdown truck agreed to recover him.

Now that's funny...😆 One of the weird things about modern biking it there is more chat about feckin modes and Bluetooth connectivity than rising the feckin thing... Much more car driving mentality these days and the crap that comes with it...

Cheers JB; he's a fan boy aint he; riding around on my old 1100 i kind of know where he's coming from; watching him pick it up had my balls squeaking having been there a few times :D ; i've not been on the water cooled GS but ive ridden the roadster and the tourer and both were very impresive so i would'nt go knocking them; who knows i 20 odd years time peope may be using them like this guy and just be needing electrical plug in gubbins in the tool kit to keep em going; but that wont be me.:beerjug:

I have an opportunity to purchase a fairly cheap project 1200 gs but it has one issue where it judders when you let clutch out .you think it needs a new clutch ?

I bought this one from a guy in London, it had been standing since 2013. The bike had been fully checked over in November 23, with a bill for £1950 included in the sale. So I knew it was ok mechanically. It’s taken a few days to clean it up and £130 on some new fasteners.
The bike was originally from Pidcocks in Long Eaton, my local dealer, they have been great providing info on the bike. It had 4500 miles in the clock when I bought it, I’m up to 5100 now.
It tall, it’s heavy, it’s great.

That looks lovely. Its funny how some bikes (and cars) sit for years doing very little and others have been to the moon and back. My bike is only 1/3 of the way to the moon after 22 years but its always shared its duties with at least one other bike.

Lovely, what's the bag on the rear?

Does the ABS work?

One of my best friends is a bike mechanic and while in the midst of fitting a new clutch and sorting out a trashed shaft drive etc on a (I think) late 1200GS, he sent me a video and all he said was…’And the moral is, don’t ever buy a BMW motorbike’. 🤣. He followed that up in a phone call and said the last good BM’s ever made were the 1150’s. He’s probably not wrong. 🤔

Just reality and I removed my working ABS, because it was a case of when ….on a 20 year old bike
Seriously, it is something that I am aware of, and I have considered removing it. At the mo I'm just leaving it on, in the vain hope that it will be OK. I did see a post the other day where you can fix it by the roadside. I will keep a copy of that under the seat.Time will tell.
