Bog standard R1200GS WC

2014 GS1200 in White, heated grips and no other options. Almost as basic as you can get. I ride 52 weeks year, so far 23000 miles and have no regrets about the spec.

Riding modes, Rain mode makes so little difference its only there as a sales aid.

The heated grips on mine are nearly useless - I'm p*ssed off as I paid £240 for them and AJ's aren't interested in swapping them for 2015 grips

The rain mode on mine makes it flat as a fart compared to normal mode, never mind dynamic mode. It's useful when in really poor weather conditions, but I rarely change out of dynamic (fun :thumby: ) mode as the TCS is less obtrusive when the front wheel leaves the ground

In Dynamic mode how high does it let the wheel come up if you give it a good handful in 2nd gear ? And do you need to bounce or clutch it up or does it straight power wheelie ?

Comes up with normal riding!

I'd filtered through to the front of a queue at the lights , car adjacent was an Audi R8 and it was clear I was going to be "in the way" and possibly short of space into some roadworks unless i "gassed it" ! Completely surprised me, thank god for the electronics because it was smoothly lowered with no drama .

If you are ESA averse, and are worried that a basic spec bike will be hard to off load in the future then one option which could work (at a price) is to buy the TE and then remove the OE suspension units and replace with manual ones of your choice (Wilbers, Ohlins, Nitron etc.). You can then disable the electronics with the Touratech DDC plug which stops error messages and allows all the other systems to still function - you'll need a plug for the front and the back at £170 each.

When you come to change the bike, you can then return to standard TE spec and either transfer or sell the lovely aftermarket stuff you purchased originally thus reducing your overall losses.

Not a cheap solution and you'd have to be pretty ESA averse to want to go down this route!

£170 for a plug :anger

Has anyone ridden a GS with and also wothout ESA? If so what differences in ride quality did you find.

Cheers

Ade

Yes me - not a lot but the dynamic suspension (not the ESA bit which is just the base settings) is noticeable, ie increased damping when accelerating and braking and dynamically better two up - but it ain't a show stopper not having it.

still moaning about those grips Sven, u never miss an opportunity!

Enjoy the new bike,
A friend collected a basic gs super low miles and 6 months old, today,
He did spend nearly two weeks wringing his hands over the te bikes,
He was surprised looking around my bike, expected it to be more basic??
What colour did you choose,,
Roamer

I'd the standard + heated grips bike for over 2yrs. Couldn't fault it in the least, only just went for TE a few weeks ago.

You got a delivery date?

Finally bit the bullet and ordered one today. Standard bike, heated grips and engine bars. Now the wait.:thumb2

Good on you , you wont be sorry. I have a 2013 without ESA, LED headlight or riding mode. Heated grips are good and I really like cruise control. I've done 20,000kms and no worries. I rode one with all of the bells and whistles and thought it felt softer than mine, with a little better performance. I put that down to normal tweaking from the early model.
Maybe I'll suffer when it comes time to sell, but many people like things a little more simple, so I will advertise it $1000.00 cheaper. My guess is that I will come out well in front. It will be the LC that buyers will be after.

Thanks lads, I ordered red as the only other available colour is the frozen blue. The dealer said he would ring on Monday and give me the estimated delivery time (probably around 6 weeks). Can't wait. I had a 1150 gs bought new in 2003 and owned for 4 years, wish I had never sold it. Then had a Varadero, Transalp and then a New Twin Cam in 2010 that I sold a year later. Then I had a Vstrom 650 up until a year and a half ago. I had a test ride on the GS LC and tried to resist but couldn't.

Time to consider swapping mine, 24000+ miles, two years old and corrosion really starting to take show now.
Dealers groan when tell them I have a GS1200, few really want your bike because there are so many very low mileage bikes available. Bottom offer for a basic GS £5500, top offer £7400 against a new bike.
One dealer withdrew an offer when he discovered my bike was not a TE.

In my experience of buying new cars & bikes, all the bling you pay a princely sum for is forgotten in a part ex ... but noted if it hasn't got it.

I just changed a LC TE. Std bike for an Adventure and have gone for the base model plus electronic suspension, cruise, heated grips and sat nav prep. After having a TE for two years I considered what I used and needed. As for PCP the electric suspension changed the figures and is reflected in a higher residual, glad I have it as I regularly change to soft for all the speed humps on the way out of the city then back to normal. I don't miss any of the other "extras " on a the TE and the price difference for the GSA spec'd my way to the GSA TE is still a chunk of money I see no benefit in spending.

Not mine ,would be interesting to see for how much is going for . Cruise , heated grips and spoked wheels and plenty of damage :D
