I was working at home today and seized the opportunity to grab a quick spin on my two week old 1100 - the first ride after refitting the left hand cylinder head (to change a weeping head gasket).

And I came back with an oily left boot again  I'm not happy....

I didn't clean the bike before riding it, so I've spent the evening trying to convince myself that it was just residual oil on the fins etc flying off in the breeze - or perhaps the rocker gasket (just please not the head gasket again...). I changed the spark plug tunnel gasket when I did the head and I've ruled out the filler cap.

I feel like spitting my dummy out and ebaying it, but I don't like being beaten by machines and I love the bike. Does anyone know a way of finding out where the oil is coming from? - it's tricky to look under the head whilst riding....

On a lighter note, I washed it when I got back (to take my mind off the oil leak) and decided to solvol the wheels. Aren't they fun to clean - not! :D - it's a long time since I've spent an hour on my knees cleaning spoked wheels and I've remembered why I thought anodised rims were such a good idea  I lost the will to live with half the back wheel done - I'll finish them this weekend.

Oil leak

Sure it's not the filler cap leaking this is an old favorite.

You should go for a beer with my little mate, I reckon you might get on :D

I think we should rename this the mattw section:D
Go ride it and dont worry about cleaning it:thumb2
Did you clean your boot from last time
Stick with it , if you sell it youll only regret it :comfort

I had the same, it was one of the seals around he bolts that hold the cover on, of course the front lower that you cannot see:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the seal wasnt seated correctly. The round one that looks like a doughnut you push the cover onto

You're right - sorry about all the questions - all this GS stuff's a bit new to me.

Not for long now!
Dave (I hate christmas &oil leaks!) GS roll on 2010

Check ...

... the circular (doughnut) seal around the plug; it's SO easy to misalign and produces prodigious amounts of oil :blast

Thanks for the replies Guys,
I've ordered two new rocker cover seals (the ones fitted are probably original so could stand changing) together with filler plug seals. I did fit new donut seals, but when I pull the rocker covers to change the cover seals, I'll check them.

As I say, I'll shut up now. Thanks for the help

cheers
Matt
