For no better reason than style I chose Alpinestar Tech3 All Terrain MX boots over others that were available ...

These come with the stitched-on, not moulded-on, sole. Therefore they have the steel protector at the front of the sole, wrapping around to protect the top and bottom of the upper-sole joint at this point.

I realise that thsi is probably going to do great job of preventing the front of the sole being torn away from the upper, or the stitching being away by off -road activity, but how often does that occur, or are these a bit of bling to make the boots look like MX boots of old ?

The reason I ask is that the steel does do a fair bot of damage to tiled, wooden and carpeted areas when walked upon, and I am thinking about removing them - thoughts?

I have a 1200GS so am not going to leaping all over the Cairngorms in the boots, but on the other hand I am taking the BMW Off Road Level One soon, and am contemplating a Moroccan dash or two....

As usual any comments are greatly appreciated, and any abuse warmly accepted...;)

How do they fare in wet weather?Any leaks? My 3year old goretex SMX3's are on the way out.Still haven't leaked a drop though..even in 6hour long rides in the pissin rain.

New tech 3's are better. I also have old tech 3's aswell. Removing the steel bit will not have a detrimental affect in normal use. Rip it off if it's a problem. They only rust and fall off after a while anyway.

Ditch the discomfort and damage.
Retain the Alpinestars name.
Keep the Cool looks.
Gain the comfort.

Don't get me wrong, I love 'em too. but for "Normal" use could do without those steel toe plates...

Sorry: misunderstood the original question!

as it goes my Tech 3s are without a steel toe cap, just a chunky toe area made of rubber. Anyway, as a day to day boot with some off-road style aspirations the Hein Gericke TRG goretex boot was great. Sturdier than most road boots, clasps, waterproof etc.
RRP at about £130

Your feet get wet.... I wear gortex socks with mine. I also keep them in the garage, because they are always covered in mud, so the steel tips not a problem.

Prying bar comes out the cupboard at the weekend!

BSD, they are not waterproof. If that is what you need then I suggest looking at the Tech6/8/10 boots.

Thanks mate..I do need them to be waterproof..as I'm on the bike all year round.Budget around 150pounds.waterproof SMX4's look good..but slightly over budget.Would any of you know if there are any shops that still have old stock goretex SMX3's to get rid of?Cheers

Non of the MX boots are waterproof really.

Warthog, sounds like you have the new Tech 3s. They are totally different to the old style boot. Tech 6/8/10 are not waterproof. Having said that, I've ridden in some bad rain and my new style tech3s have yet to leak. My old Tech 3's that get used for trials and enduros get wet if you stand in a puddle. Suggest sealskins to anyone who wants to keep their feet dry. Waterproof boots are hugely more expensive and rarely are waterproof for long unless you spend alot of money.
