Anyone locally, ie Central Scotland, got one and would be willing to help a friend of mine? He's in Edinburgh and has a non-starting 1100GS. All sorts of things have been tried, including swapping coils which was initially successful and then not.

He's currently being a mature student and so is a bit strapped for cash and won't be riding to Nepal again in the near future.....;)

BM Club has one for loan to members I believe. Take it the usual suspects have been tried: ignition switch and wiring thereto and wiring to the HES?

Aye, a hev yin :thumb2 but I do not have the three pin adapter that is needed for 1100. Soz.

GS911 3-pin Adapter
This adapter is required to connect your GS-911 interface to the older models that have a 3-pin Diagnostic connector. It is intended for models that have the MA2.2 Engine control unit and ABS-II (if equipped with ABS).

Well go and buy one, Kenny. You can probably get it delivered before you have to nip up to Edinburgh with it.

OK.....I kid......:D

Whauraboots in the Borders?

{Edit} Looks like you might be in Teri Toon {/Edit}

Mike, AFAIK the diagnostic connector doesn't tell you much on the ABS II machines apart from bits and bobs on the ABS status and a bit of diagnostics for the TPS.

Most of the ABS stuff you can read with the right bit of wire and a bulb - blink codes explained here - http://www.largiader.com/abs/absfault.html

(They are a bit like PC BIOS Beep codes if you have ever had the misfortune).

I have a "tool" I bought on eBay (but can't find the instructions :() which is like the motobins £25 light on a box.

Cheers

Alistair.

Thanks guys - perhaps we need to have a bit of a rally round to get an all-round good guy and world explorer like Cyprys back on the road......:thumb2

Mick whats the symptoms and what has been tried ?

I'm told it won't start. Last time that he got it started it was by swapping a coil for a known working one. He was then away for a bit and the bike was left sitting. When he got back, he tried it again with the same coil and no joy.

I just spoke to him about it briefly last night. I'll send him the link to this thread. His account on here appears to still be active.

hello everybody!

OK. I got the bike in pieces and put it all together again. It worked well after sitting in the shed for few years in bits. After few minutes it was obvious that the clutch is done and needs replacing. so far so good. Me and a friend from whom I have the GS managed to replace the clutch. It took us a while but...
On the way back home from his home in Aberdeenshire the bike started to behave strange. It was not reacting to throttle. Going 80 mph and accelerating did nothing. It almost felt like clutch was slipping again. It was like this untill I got to a full stop. then the bike died. I managed to start it again ang got back to edinburgh struggling everytime bike got to a full stop. I had to rev it a bit in order to keep engine running.
Bike since then behaves odd. starts and then dies, cutts off, backfires etc. There is also this strange compressed air sound from the cylinders, I think.
this is a short movie clip I made so you hopefuly can hear what's happening

Some suggested the Hall sensor so I replaced it. 90 Quid later still no change.
My friend and fellow UKGSER brought over his igniotion coil and leads so we could try if this helps. We put his ignition coil on and the bike was cured! It ran OK, no backfires, no chocking, nothing, just a nice regular GS engine noise. So we decided to get a new coil when I get back from holidays. When I swap the coil for the new one the bike was still shite. Now it also seems that it's working on one cylinder. I tried to test ride it but it was unpleasant, very jerky and finally it died. Is the coil faulty? (SH from motorworks).
any suggestions as the season is approaching fast and it would be lovely to start riding.
regards

ok ok - I balls'd up re the hall sensor - BUT.....

listening to that video I wonder if it's not a fuel problem. Something choked maybe. Even the fuel pump seals could have dried out and now there is a fuel pressure problem.

where's Schtum.............. :hide

seal has been replaced for new one when I assembled the tank. fuel pump? next time Dave comes up we'll switch tanks.

The video sounds like a supercharger spinning up :)

when you changed the coils did you change the leads at the same time ? In case these are breaking down under load

we checked the leads too,but before I put the new coil.
