Yeah it seems okay, not doing any more mods for now other than a tool tube on the nearside below the seat.... somehow.
I really enjoy riding it on the road. Agreed, its no ktm-- disappointed with the tyres off-road but it was very wet on its first proper ride out so i will reserve judgment until the ground conditions improve. One trail over the moors resulted in my feet getting blasted off the pegs by the water thrown out by the front wheel-- not nice but its due to the lower ground clearance and footpegs. It could do with some chequerplate to infill the gaps on the leading edge of the bashplate to deflect the water.
Might to go for full knobblies to make it work offroad. Didnt want to do that because the road sections cover more distance for me than the trails, hence the Anakee Wilds.
First service on tuesday. Up to now i've been sticking to the 6000rpm limit stated in the book. Its loosened up nicely already so it will be interesting to see what power lurks further up the rev range.
It could do with a bit more torque lowdown-- my local racebike shop suggested lowering the gearing. Not really an option when the road sections are such a big part of my riding. Hilltop maybe, if he does ( or could do) a program for it.
drop 15 tooth front sprocket will make it better and rev out faster . just put a mitas 09 the rear for the mud , it will rise the rev by 500 but if the rear tyre is bigger all is = flat on the road 87mph so far
Tool tube fitted today
Fitted this today, big enough for tools and puncture kit.
Used a longer bolt into one of the rear rack fastening points and a P clip on the front end. Ran a straight edge on the sidewalls of the tyre to check for clearance when the suspension compresses-- approx one centimetre clear.

Vario box fitted for a trip.
Today's task was to fit an old style Vario topbox to the 310..
Apparently the Vario box for the GS LC fits straight onto the 310's rack
. It would be nice to clip one straight into place but I haven't got one for my LC so the old one will have to do.
The rack has pre-cast holes on the underside for M6 nuts to slot into so it was easy enough to fasten a piece of 1.5mm mild steel onto the top. The black plastic Vario adaptor was then bolted onto this.
I thought it might look a bit too big but it seems reasonably well proportioned.
Next job....make a 1200LC tankbag fit the 310.

The shape of the tank isn't a great deal different on the 310 compared to the 1200 and as I have a spare tank bag for the 1200 I thought I would try to make it fit.
The front harness piece was a straight swap....the rear is slightly different due to the smaller size of the tanks. The little hooks on the harness are too far apart to locate properly on the bottom edge of the tank plastics. Bugger. After a failed attempt to make a metal piece with slots for the hooks to locate into I decided to use some old ratchet straps material. A couple of lengths slotted through the buckle and bolted down with the existing fasteners was enough to make it secure although it's used almost all of the adjustment on the straps.
The Nav cradle is still visible so it's all good to go.
I know....it's orange....and slightly different length. OCD might kick in and sort it out one day.. I wanted the orange to be hidden but the hooks are too bulky to fit between the seat and tank-- I think they would have damaged the front edge of the seat as they were squashed tight when further down. I preferred leaving the hooks in place rather than removing them and making it unusable on the 1200 in future.
Hepco Becker pannier racks on order and will be fitted with some touratech softbags. Hopefully the tooltube will be able to stay in its current location.

Off into that there Europe next month-- it was supposed to be a 1200gs road trip with maybe a few gentle trails but the rest of the group are on middleweight adv bikes and intend doing more traily stuff, meaning my 1200 ( or the rider..!) would possibly limit what we could do as a group..... hence all the mods and bits being nailed onto the awesome 310.

Why didnt you just get the KTM instead of trying to make the 310 more Orange?

We have been looking for the "unicorn" of bikes for a few years now and I feel its the 690 so I just acquired one.
Steve took a gamble and went for the 310 as he thinks outside the box.
After riding his 310 i was very impressed. Not much power but enough. Very comfy. Managed all the medium off road stuff we did.
There will probably be a video after the 2000 miles jaunt around the Alps next month which will decide which is the unicorn or maybe neither where they will be both for sale on ebay.
Haha. Four riders , four different bikes, BMW KTM Aprilia pegaso and an SWM.
Fitting hepco becker racks to mine this week. The touratech softbags i nearly sold, before the trip plans changed, will fit onto the racks. Tent and camping gear in a big drybag on the pillion seat. Sorted... hopefully.

Majority of the weight is taken by the topbox rack mounting points with two bars going down to the pillion footpegs, plus a bar across the back to stiffen it all up.

Tooltubes
On the rear of the pannier rack their is a mounting point for an adaptor for HB panniers. These are not needed for my TT softbags so I knocked up a couple of brackets to mount tooltubes.
Might need a vertical support at the front end because the P clips don't grip tight enough to provide any load carrying.

M'off.... Ferry from Hull tonight into that there Europe. Four of us heading vaguely Italy direction to do some of the Italian TET.
Glad I specified the slightly harder rally raid rear spring. The standard spring rate was ,according to the figures, just about suitable for me (85kg without riding gear) but the bike seems very softly sprung as standard so I specified the next one up.

Bugger. Too late to tell you not to get the AW's
I did 15k on these 3 rears and front changed early. They are a good road tyre apart from the howl from the front. They are crap in mud or where there is no hard base when they get worn down. Michelin dont supply offroad pressures as they want you to run road pressures offroad tried this on hard stoney ground and they skip like hell. I found 2bar on the gsa lc to be about the best compromise on the rear and about 1.8 on the front. The carcass is too soft imho so watch your rims in rocky terrain.

maybe because he wanted one of these??have a great time mich a/w will do the job my rear ran for 6k with no problems. leave at road pressure they are radials so have a flex in the sidewall. waiting for the ride report .
how many years are you going for with all that kit, from the photo how long will it before your bag melts exhaust side !!
