Just got my bike back from its 30k service.

"Im sorry sir, but at next service all your brake discs will require replacing".

Like WTF?! Even sportsbike discs dont warp/fail/wear out that quick!!!

No doubt somebody will correct me if I,m wrong, but I think the current pads on the 1200`s (RT & GS) are sintered, and as such wear out the disks quicker but supposedly offer better performance, I,m wondering whether the gain is worth the disk wear and am considering changing to organic pads from the after-market manufacurers like EBC,
Anybody tried these and noticed any change in braking performance or disk wear ???

My 56 1200 Adventure had organic front and back. This might be different on the 07s. The back pad wore out really quickly, so they replaced it with a sintered one (under warranty as premature wear). My understanding was that sintered pads were an option that you could request at time of replacement.... They're quite a bit more expensive than the organics (£85ish i think).

I used EBC HH sintered pads on the front of my Tigers (prior to getting my GS) instead of the standard organic pads, because there was an immediate improvement in braking performance, even before the pads bedded in the difference could be felt.
Can't say I noticed any increase in disc wear though.

30 000 miles from brake discs? I wonder if BM want them, to see how they made one set last so long?

ISTR that BMW set the minimum service life of a set of R1200GS front discs as 10K miles. 30K doesn't sound too bad. I can wear out a set of front discs on the car in less than that.....:augie

IalsoSTR that Steptoe is now doing replacement discs for the 1200 in both standard and wavy designs.

Errr.......if you are willing to pay £85 for a set of pads you must be barmy.....check out Steptoe's prices....that's more like it....:thumb

Like I said warranty claim. Those guys at Vines are great.

My 06 1200GS has covered 14,700 miles in ten months and has has two rear discs first at 6,000 miles second at 13,000 miles and a front set at 13,000 miles all due to warping. Smacks of poor quality materials to me. Oh for a 1200 with 1150 build quality now that would be a bike :thumb (have had two 1150's and am currently on a 1200)

Sorry Easyrider :augie

138'000 miles from a set of Yamaha ventilated discs (same sort of thing as car discs) on a 1984 XJ900. I fitted sintered pads at their first replacement and never looked back (don't waste your time with substandard brakes. Sintered pads work better last longer and offer much greater feel and modulation). I bought the XJ with 1'800 miles on the clock and did all of that milage myself.

My 1200's rear disc was below the minimum 4mm at 18'000 service :spitfire

I PM'd Steptoe about a week ago, he said he doesn't currently have any rear discs for the 1200 :(

I'll wait till I can find aftermarket disc's rather than fit OE one's.

They told me the same thing 2 years , 25000miles and two clean mots ago. Its bolox. theres a world of difference between bmw speak and the real world. If it was my bike chris I would let an independant like manhattan have a look at them every 8/10k. Theres plenty of life left after bmw tolerances have been and gone.

What does someone more knowledgable think? are main agents lifting customers shirts?
