brake disk (wavy vs std)

I can`t see how wavy discs can be anything more than a fashion thing for gays.

I'm sure that was uppermost in the mans mind when he decided to stock them. what a pathetic statement.

and no.. I don't have them. still on the 11yr old originals.

Actually a good Q.
I don't know the answer and would also like to understand the benefits if any of fitting these?
Less fade/ better braking performance may show these are better than std as heat is dissapated quicker. Donno?

mainly for offroad crossers, keeps the crap off better,. and lighter,
waste of time on the road, wears pads more too,
iv had a few bikes with em on, waste of time

lookin at steptoe,s offering,i wouldnt call that a proper wavy disc, i recon that would be ok on the road
more than some, but i still wouldnt get one over a normal disk

OOH ERR, GET YOU (grasps handbag in a Reeves & Mortimer fashion)

Wavy's

There just made for followers of all thats fashionable in MCN, goes with the cloured leathers! and sells i.e. makes money.

Are they stainless? hard to see from the pictures but the "standard" ones for sale don't look like it. I hate the rusty type despite their supposedly better braking. Any gain is lost when the pads get impregnated with rust.

Mine don't go rusty, they are made from high quality metals, and not to be confused with nasty monkey metal offerings sold by others :D

And the benefits for wavy disc is supposedly for off road use, clears the mud and muck off the disc instead of clogging up the disc and calipers.

I'm sure making a fashion statement doesn't enter the head of the average GS rider :augie :D

Unless you make a point of cleaning the holes in your discs you may find that they are half clogged with brake dust and road crap so if wavy's clear better that may be a benefit. The Lucas Alien wavy's are supposed to resist heat distortion better as well. There is also a floating option for the front of the GS in the Lucas range, I may try a set. :ymca ? :beerjug:

I have just replaced all the discs and pads on my 1150GSA with Steptoes wavy discs and the pads which he recommended. I chose the wavy's because I haven't tried them before and there wasnt a major price difference.

The holes in my OE discs were always partially blocked & there seems to be an abnormally large build up of dirt on the GS compared to my other bike or any previous bikes, even though I tend to keep them clean. I haven't noticed such a build up on the brakes with these but the wheels are still the same, so there is an improvement.

As far as performace they are far better than what they replaced but it could be to the same level as a new OE set & I dont have the money to do a back to back test. I do know that the results on the MOT brake test rig were higher than I have seen from this bike before but again it could be because all the parts are new.

I'm happy with them, thanks St Eptoe :clap

I'm sure Mr Steptoe wouldn't stock something purely for the fashionista's:augie (mind he is near London:D).

As already said, I am also sure that they will be better than cast iron discs (rusty ones) for road use. I fitted a set of cast irons to and old K a few years ago and regretted it as they rusted at the merest hint or water, seized to the pads if left outside for a night or two in the rain, and as they didn't have holes, had a momentary lag in the wet with my HH pads while they cleared the water and heated up a bit. Not f'ing good on a busy rush-hour m'way:eek:

I spoke to Wal at PFM about brakes a while back, he seems to know his stuff and can back it up with many race wins and having riders such as that late and great Hizzy setting lap records on his discs.

I was after advice for ZZR14's which warp the OEM chocolate discs in very short order, he told me Wavy are only any good for clearing mud from brakes and of no benefit for road use and until someone invents a brake pad that works on thin air they will not outperform standard discs.

I almost ordered some Ductile Iron discs, but as he had none in stock settled for their steel discs, you could tell just by looking at them they were of a very high standard, what I also liked was the fact the discs can be seperated from the rotors, so if you ever wear a disc out you only have to buy a new rotor which is about half the cost of a complete disc.

You can also swop between steel and iron rotors as carriers are the same, pity they do not do wave discs or you would be able to swop them around.

Some great info here, including some on Wave discs:
