That would just trigger the lamp failure warning, not the brake failure warning, no?Check the tail light bulb housing etc for corrosion. Also check the bulb hasn't blown 1 of it's filaments.
If the tail filament blows the brake filament will illuminate at reduced power, making it look like the back light is okay.
The housing is also prone to corrosion.

I've also got the red light of death on: ABS Fault! but I find a quick tap with a metallic instrument (not a hammer) on the ABS Motor and Hey presto red light go's out, all well for a short time may be 100 miles or might just last 100yds brushes in the ABS motor F----d . Not a cure but indicates where to fault is. hope that helps.
