Hello all. Changing the brake fluid and clutch fluid on my 04 1150GSA integrated servo abs. I know I need dot 4 . How much will i need for the brakes and clutch and (dont laugh) is brake and clutch fluid the same thing!?
Any recommendations of which type to use.

yeah sometimes called 4dot clutch/brake fluid...
about half litre...
i usual buy the stuff from halfords...

If you've never bled servo brakes before you may need more than a litre. The servos sure do shove it through quick

I have a 2002 GS ABS non-servo and my local guy wouldn't change the brake fluid as he's been told by BMW that they need to plug in the diagnostics computer afterwards to check it and prevent the ABS lights from flashing. I mean to start a new thread but this one will do instead.

Is BMW just trying to get money out of me? I don't fancy the 80 mile round trip for something so simple.

I think the problem is if you get an airlock in the ABS unit then I am told only BMW can sort it out. Don't know if this is true 'cos don't know how they sort it.

I bled mine the old fashioned way. Just make sure that you have fluid in the reservoir and don't let it go too low and make sure that the bleed pipe stays under some fluid in a jar etc. I have a non-return valve in my tube but don't trust it. Squeeze the lever in slowly when flushing through.
You know when you are done as you have clean fluid coming through.
Don't forget to do both calipers.

easy enough to do it yourself.

None of this applies to servo brakes...... You'll end up with no fluid in the servos bleeding them the "usual" way.

Try looking at this;

I know this is the over complicated procedure. If you've never worked on your brakes before this should help you understand the procedure and help give you a comprehensive understanding of your brake system.

So as not to confuse you further, I realised from Steptoe's comment that I forgot to add that I have non servo ABS.
