Brake fluid change

I bought my 1100 new in July 1999 so next month it is 12 years old.

Apart from the 600 mile service I have done all the maintenance myself. I'm sure I have read somewhere that the brake fluid needs changing every 12 years... is this correct?

You can joke..... I had my 3 year old Golf serviced yesterday - it's on a service plan. The service receptionist phoned to tell me that it was ready to be collected but there was an additional brake fluid service which they could perform for £59.00. I suggested to him it should have been performed at 2 years but he was adamant that VW now specify every 3 years. I ranted at him a bit about it not being included in the service plan and he relented and said they'd do it for free.

For the avoidance of any doubt, BMW Motorrad now specify a brake fluid change at the first annual service and every two years thereafter...

Nice to know they keep the 1100s' service schedule up to date, including the FIRST annual servicing

Me too, every spring the calipers come off for a coat of looking at and then bled, cheap insurance.

AS you hardly use the back brake at all..I simply drain front and back in order to swop the brake fluids over...sorted Likewise my 20/50 from the 1100 is well thrashed so that then goes into my airhead and then a couple of years later into my Land Rover. Win Win Win

So you get the dealer to do it?

I just don't fancy my ABS unit and calipers internally corroding due to the moisture absorbed by the fluid and it's so cheap and easy to do (on a non-servo bike anyway) that it's a no-brainer.
But each to their own

It's easier to see the bubbles in brake fluid when it's black and gooey, and also,it doesn't run as far when you spill it
