Anyone had brakes making a noise like an old bus. This only happens when just about stopped. ie very slow speed. Just had the bike in for 600 mile service they checked it out.(cleaned brake caliper etc.) but it still sounds like an old bus. I know I could file the leading edge of the brake pads and put a cut through the pad. But I just spent, like a lot of you quite a few quid for this bike and I think BMW should sort it. Any thoughts?

Ride safe.

This is a common problem with these bikes and taking the edge off the pads and using a little copper slip on the backs helps for a while but it dont fix it. BMW are supposed to be comming up with a fix, I was told this in May, but not sure which year they plan on doing anything !!!

mine also started the squeeling at about 1000km's, it is irritating but has it's advantages when coming to a stop at pedestrian crossings, traffic lights and stop streets etc. it sure let's the pedestrians know I'm there, here in South Africa are many pedestrians that just think they own the road and try and sell you all sorts of things from african art to cellphone accesories by dodging between cars at stop streets and traffic lights, rather that have them walk in front of me I 'squeel' at them :)

Yeah well, in Paris at least two people made overtly fun of my 12GS because of the braking squealing noise.
One of them said to me that the squeal was exactly the same than the one made by the infamous "la mobylette bleue"...

I noticed this recently and thought I would mention it when it goes in for its 600 miler.

Its not a major problem and one I can live with for now as the bike I traded in when I bought the GS (Varadero) made exactly the same noise at the same spreeds.

A little more disapointed with the side stand problem highlighted in another thread. Not what you expect with a premium brand really.

Incidentally, the Varadero suffered from a similar problem with a bracket welded to the back of the tank that acted as a locating post for the seat. The bracket was welded before the tank was painted and rust would get in between the bracket & the tank.

Never heard of one falling off though!

My brakes make the same noise. I mentioned it when I took it in for the 600 mile service and they removed and cleaned the pads.

It still makes the noise, but not all the time. It seems to be a common problem but only a very minor irritation given the completeness of the bike as a whole so I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

Yep, cleaning the calipers/pads makes it worse not better, a bit of hard use plus a bit of crap building up seem to stop it eventually.
