Brake Pad Change ... How Easy ?

Same here, I've had 1 GS and two GSA all the same no issues at all with pads wearing out early. Done 12,000 miles now and both front and rear have loads of wear left.

Try turning the twistgrip a bit more :blagblah

Bike serviced at 5,500 miles and reported as 80% worn, so I changed them as I had a long trip planned.
Bike serviced at 11,500 miles and fronts reported as 90% - 95% worn. Did another 1200 miles then changed them, the wear indicators were still visible.
Dealer wanted £170 to replace the front pads, or £149 just to buy them. Bought Brembo sintered from Motorworks, less than £70 delivered, replacing the fronts is a simple process.

EBC double H sintered

I've always used EBC double H sintered pads and replaced myself, it's a good opportunity to check and clean the callipers and pistons. Don't forget to copper grease the back of the pads and calliper bolts. I've not personally changed the pads on the 2014 GSA LC yet as I only got it in June. Must remember to check them, but they were good when I serviced it and put new tyres on the rims.

Still on my originals front and back after 18,000 miles.

Ooops sorry I didn't realise turning the twist grip wore out the pads. To be fair I don't use the brakes all the time generally use the gears to slow up for a bend you can scrub off a lot of speed with the gears providing your reading the road, and don't have to panic brake into the bends.

I removed both front and rears at the weekend and cleaned them up both sets still have the wear line / groove in them I've done 15,000
I would say a change at 20,000 would be about right

Don't use the gears to brake unless you want to replace the gearbox.....I think the poster means "engine/compression breaking" by selecting an appropriate lower gear :rob:nod

I'd rather use the brakes and wear the pads than use engine brake and wear the engine, even if it is marginal and when done correctly. Whilst I've heard there is no statistically significant extra wear from engine braking, there is stress transference across drivetrain teeth, especially upon excessive load. See here. I suspect the right approach is a combination of both, egines are usually built to fairly high tolerances.

Total rubbish, have you ever been to a motorcycle race for example BSB they drop through the box a couple of cogs at a time. complete twoddle. and yes thank you engine compression braking.

Terry

Racers generally don't care about the result of using engine breaking, they care about what makes them fastest around the track.

And remind me, how long do those engines last? Engine brake is obviously one of many factors and probably least relevant to the life of one of them engines.

Feck....Why don't you go out and try dropping down a "couple of cogs" and just see what happens, maybe you can afford to replace those cogs your talking about or maybe your adapt at riding a bike with the back wheel locked up. The BSB racers your talking about are still using the engine NOT THE FECKING GEARBOX for braking :comfort

Yep next gear down and closed throttle = engine breaking

A now retired BMW Motorrad mechanic told me they know if riders are advanced riders as the braking system wear little and generally are inefficient, people who ride in/out of large cities eat up their brakes but are very efficient.

I don't live in a city, I have done IAM & RoSPA, my brakes typically last much longer than many and I haven't lunched a gearbox, yet.

The engine braking in the GS is fantastic, a well planned ride should not see you using the brakes that much. Brake pads are cheap to buy and fit yourself, what dealers charge is acceptable, only you know which is best for you.

Thank you Sir, someone on here with sense. Exactly right.
