out for a spin today noticed what sounded like brake pads worn down , sure enough got off and the rear pads are shagged and have scored the disk, bit weird as only had em changed 3000 miles ago, but then noticed the same grating noise when i pulled the front brake, have checked the front pads and they seem fine, is this some kind of brake linkage thing and the grating sound is coming from the rear barkes when i am pulling the front? or is it maybe something else... anyone else getting 3k on rear pads?

hoping for some speedy parts delivery as booked to go to santander on sunday...

contact 23, yes the brakes on the GS are linked. The front brake handle also activate one piston of the rear brake. The rear brake pedal only operates the rear brake. This linking causes the rear pads to wear out much faster than the front pads. Even so, 3000miles is a bit on the low side. I'm usually getting more like 5-6000. Depends on driving style and possibly also on pad brand. Check your rear pads often to avoid scored rotor!

sorted now, thanks for the pointers people, the pads were thinner than a thin thing , man brakes!

well I ordered the new pads n brakes from james sherlock arrived to Ireland in 2 days ...deadly service! also as a banker got the rear pads only sent up from kearys of cork at 47 euro for a set! fitted the rear pads with some help from this in depth brake service file

thanks again to all!!

Hi

You should check your hand guards aren't twisted a little bit.

My rear pads dissappeared and it seems it was down to the front brake lever being very gently applied by the hand guard being twisted by a few mm. I had fitted muffs before a trip and it seems I twisted the guard slightly during fitting, and then could't see the offset because of the muff.

It only took a single day 500 mile ride to do it.

The pressure on the lever was very very gentle. The brake light wasn't activated and the lever could still be pushed forwards a fraction from its rest positon. However, it seems at speed the wind pressure on the muff was enough to bend things back slightly and drag the brake.

A following friend (who could see my brake light) said afterwards he'd wondered why I kept braking during the day's ride. I knew I should have fitted those BMW stickers.

Darren
