Brakes!! Lack of

I would go option B, look at it another way, you could get 5 second hand ones for the price of a new one.
Surley this has to be the option unless you have a spare and I mean spare £1600 lieing around doing nothing.

I stand to be corrected here, but if the brakes lack servo assistance, then it is a fault with the servo, not the modulator. The modulator only provides the ABS function, no?

My Bike did exactly this last week.

Your ABS modulator unit has failed. This unit is "coded" to the bike from new and they are not interchangeable so you CAN NOT buy a salvaged one as they cannot be reprogrammed..

The units are circa £1350 + £280 + VAT fitted (BMW).

Mine was on a 2006 GS 1200 (May 2006). BMW have paid for the part as a goodwill gesture I am paying for the fitting, then the bike is being ridden to Balderstons where I have bought a NON ABS GSA!

I understand BMW will pay for the unit on bikes less than 5 years old.

Hope this helps

A real understatement!

Hope this helps It does seem that the obvious straightforward way, via the dealer, can often be the best way!!!

just to add my brake issue: i put the key in and turn it... wait for boot check to complete and sometimes when the bike starts i have no servo and brake failure light. when i wiggle the brake switch cable servo resumes. i've sprayed contacts on switch but not solved. tonight i'm going to strip it down to see if they're are any problems.

Update: not sure if front brake switch is just for brake light or has anything to do with servo? I found the switch to be loose which is partly held in place by a small grub screw (those crazy germans ;). Tightend up and all seems good. Anyone know if this switch is connected in anyway to servo operation?

Have decided to do away with servo and ABS. Buike is being set up with 'ordinary' brakes.

Will let you know how it works out.

Brakes - ABS

I too have had an ABS Unit fail. Mine is on an 06 GS but a late 06 Nov(Australian model) which means a Generation 2 ABS unit with no servo. Brake light stayed on but at least I had brakes, just no ABS. Aparrantly there is a small DC motor in the unit and the brushes go. BMW have agreed to replace the Unit (Au$2953) but I have to pay for fitting. Still frustrating although out of warranty, but only 39K Ks. Love the bike otherwise, just hope nothing slse goes??

Out today got almost to Bury Hill when brake failure warning light came on. Pulled over and stopped retarted still on. I rode round a carpark but had hardly any brakes. Stopped and started a couple of time and the brake light went off and I had brakes, all the time the servo is 'whining' as normal. Got to Bury had coffee, came to ride home , no brakes. Tried stopping and starting but nothing so rode 30 miles home with no brakes. Got back home stopped and started again everything back working again. Tried again 5 mins later no brakes. Will book it in tomorrow but has anybody any ideas. Bike is due a 24,000 mile service.

Thanks

Further to the above the bike has been with Steve marshall at Liphook for about five weeks. He tried a secondhand ABS unit-- no good. So decided to remove ABS and servo. After a short delay in getting parts picked up bike last Saturday. Front brake feels the same but the the back brake is now about 10 times more powerful. Will have to get used to using it as brakes are no longer linked, as I don't ride like a hero I hope I will never notice the lack of ABS. Now the brakes work even when the engine is turned off.

Thanks to Steve and all at Liphook (01428 727700) they have done a very good job and I reccommend them and this option if your ABS is playing up.
