Brand new, 2019 R1250GS “unsafe to drive” due to front Calliper leakage

I have a GSA and owned it for two years and done 22000 miles my first BMW ever as always mainly had Hondas before. I love-my BMW the way it rides and its comfort but i will say I have never owned a bike with so many parts replaced under warranty!
Front Shock leaking oil
Front Fork recall
Left Hand switch gear
Full exhaust (Valve Stuck)
Bearing in rear shaft pivot
Oh and Rattle from engine that I was told was a faulty batch of exhaust valves all replaced

Still love the bike it has never let me down when riding just a shame a premium brand with premium prices has such a shoddy supply chain.

Bit after all that, they have never questioned fixing the the issues and always given me a replacement toy to play with. Should I buy another BMW given the issues probably not will i probably Yes

But who pays for all these issues in the long run? sure, some will be passed back to the supplier base who in turn will notch up the pice to cover the issues... but most of the cost will be carried by BMW... and their cars are no better. Talking to a guy last night who said his BWM M had gone back for shell replacements! so how much did this cost them?
Its the punters who are paying for all these issues make no mistake... they would be £K cheaper if they didn't have any for sure....

Anyone ever worked out how much a GS costs to build?
Ford can now make the 1ltr engine all in for £100!!.... so work that through the bike.. a lot of moulding that will be cheap as chips (ok, there is tooling cost to recover etc), castings, wheels, folks, electronics, frame, shocks, exhaust, seats... not a lot when you add it up... wild guess, but I'd say no more than £2500-£3000 in bits.... add build labour??... it will be the overhead that increases the cost a lot (R&D, design, testing, purchasing teams, etc)... and a large chunk to cover re-work costs and parts...

would be interesting to know the numbers behind the build.... We are paying far too much for what they are, thats for sure...

I disagree.

You try building an Adventure Bike from scratch. See how that works out?

I don't mind paying BMW for all their R&D for what is overall an excellent bike, and a world class leader.

Yes it has it's cheap faults, the dangerous ones are unforgivable... so that needs fixing immediately... but the cosmetic faults are just annoying... nothing more.

Should you be paying £5k for a new one.... no, I don't think so.

What do you disagree with.. List the parts and put a price at the side of each one... remember, you are not building an adventure bike.. you are building 20,000 or 50,000 adventure bikes... How much do you think they will pay for tyres for example.. We pay lets say £100 for one.. what do you think their cost will be?

I think there is one catch in the equation. Numbers.

The cost of setting up a production line is the same, whether you sell one unit or a million units.
I don't know the production numbers for the engine you are comparing to, but I don't think it would be wrong to suggest that the car engine will be produced in at least 10 times compared to a MC.

Anyway, if it so easy to cut the cost to way below current price, I wonder how come no one have done it. Surely that would give them an edge in the marked to be able to sell an equal product at 20% lower price.

£ 150 - Frame
£ 50 - Body Panels
£ 70 - Electrics
£ 100 - Engine and Ancillaries
£ 80 - Tyres
£ 80 - Exhaust System
£ 5 - Shift Cam
£ 1 - Suspension
£ 1 - Spoked Wheels
£ 1 - Hayes Brakes
£ 1 - Shaft Drive
£ 1 - Paintwork

Total Build £ 540

Plus £ 15,000 per bike to pay for Ewan and Charlie marketing, cocaine journalist payoffs, Kevin Ash's Wife settlement, KTM Spies, Shareholder Prostitute Parties, Emission Testing Bribes, research and blackmail information, competitive new technology patent suppression, cyber terrorism and hacking, a single lap on a closed Nurburgring circuit.... just to keep them on top

Plus £ 2,000 to the dealer showroom, so they look legit.... and keeps them quiet to suck up your shit when you go back moaning about rust.

There you go.... everyones a winner

Just checked my March 1st registered GSA after 2000 miles and all seems good. Hopefully you will see your new bike soon.

I'm not saying they make the same volumes as a car.. but even if it was double that, the engine bit woulkd be £200.. you'd set up a line to support the numbers forecast.. and why don't they cut costs.. they don't need to, people are buying all they can produce anyway... why bother if your margine is double what Honda take on a bike? they are selling a brand and people will pay what they ask, if its worth it or not...

:yelrotflm Had not seen that before ... frame £50 id say.. body panels.. £50 at a push... Tyres... I know how much a UK manufacturer pays per tyre.. and thats about £17.50 each

you'd struggle to get it to £3K even with your engine at £200... so what are we paying for??

Back in 1998 I was told what Honda Japan were selling VTR1000's for to Honda UK and obviously Honda Japan were making a profit at the factory gate and shipping bikes here
It was an eye opener bearing in mind that the RRP was about £9000 to punters
Then parallel imports came about and Honda uk dropped the RRP to £6000 overnight - 30% reduction in the blink of an eye
You are right Beaver they are cheap to make - ever wondered why BMW 'goodwill' is so generous??????

Not me..... I bought ONE BMW R1200GSA and paid it off. So no PCP, no Finance, no Extended Warranty, no ongoing Servicing Costs.... nothing.

I'm off into the sunset now.... see you in a few years :D

Thank you BMW, it was nice knowing you :augie

Its not what you've spent.. it's what you've lost.. whats it worth now...?

I'm not happy with the potential loss on mine.. if I keep it 10 years it may be worth £4K?.. thats a £3.5K loss! (or £350 a year)... But I am from Yorkshire :)

OMG... your life must be shit if you gauge everything on how much you've lost...

... Here's a novel idea.. what about how much I've gained???

Weeks away touring with my buddies, every weekend out and about, all the mechanical pleasure and satisfaction I've had stripping it down, maintaining it, rebuilding it, modifying it, sat outside biker cafes in the sun staring at it, all the people I've met because of it, miles and miles and miles of roads and adventure on it....

Fuck me..... get out in the sunshine you miserable bastard and stop rubbing your pennies together to keep them shiney .... you could be stone cold dead tomorrow morning.

Some odd folks around :) If you think BMW are so shit, go buy something else. Every manufacturer is in it to make a profit, there is no such thing as a perfect motorcycle or car for that matter. For me what matters is, when something goes wrong, how they look after you, and BMW are pretty damn good at that, other manufacturers not so.

It's not often I agree with you, but well said :clap :blast :P

Rightly so, as they've got lots of practice :hide :JB
