brand new BMW boxes corroding

your lucky, my box's came already with white corrosion all over them

BMW wouldn't do a thing about it so I'm in the middle of wrapping them

despite having to take my brand new 2017 GSA TE back and reject it, now that's hassle ............................

Aren't these supposed to be rufty rufty go anywhere do anything adventure bikes that look the best with a travel worn patina, not shiney being that doesn't go out in the rain.

That said I have paid a lot for the bike and a lot for the panniers and whilst I don't want then to be shiney, I don't want the white rust worm on them. It is possible to include things in the metal composition to reduce the problems or paint or wrap.

Send them away and get them anodised inside and out because that oxidisation will eventually take place on the inside as well and everything you put in there will get a small amount of white powder on it and it's not the type you can sniff.

I guess the dots will eventually join up and you will get a uniform oxidised appearance - could take a few years of spottiness though!

Excuse my ignorance, but is the corrosion a problem?

Obviously the corrosion doesn't look good... But does it actually cause any problems on the panniers?

I have the BMW topbox and vario panniers... They have some minor corrosion but nothing that I think of as out of the ordinary for aluminium / alloy in everyday use

No, in fact I had previously had two top cases on previous bikes, used them all year round, no problem. It was only became apparent (to me) this was an issue after I bought brand new complete set with my 2016 1200 GSA.

Having had owned Givi and other makes previously I was impressed with the durability and robustness of the BMW aluminium system. Other than the spots that spoil the look Im still very pleased with them. What other system gives 114 litres total capacity and keeps the width down to < 1.0 m is waterproof and robust, single key the same as the bike when fitted to a 1200 GSA

Im not a fan of keyless ignition for bikes.

Having said that if there was a better luggage system that filled the other criteria Id be tempted if and when I replace the current steed.

Indeed I am and happy to meet up and show you what a set of wrapped panniers and top box look like in the flesh. Real easy to do as well took me about 20 minutes per box to complete!! Here's some pics of them..
