Brand new Laptop belly up what would you do?

I bought an Asus I7 top of the range laptop last Thursday evening and by Friday afternoon and three windows updates it went to the BSOD... Blue Screen of Death...
I can get my money back no problem but will just get another machine. I like the Asus and will probably just buy the same again due to the problem being 90%windows or 10% HD.

But should I buy somet else instead....

Whichever I do I will stop windows updates for a few weeks to see if they sort the problem.

And know I will not buy a mac as it can't do what I need it to, but is in my price range....

So HP or ASUS....

We have a few ASUS laptops in here and they are fine. Great price for what you get. Obviously doesn't have the build quality of HP or Lenovo. Only thing I don't like is I think they have USA keyboards (€ symbol on the 5, @ somewhere wrong)

Turn on error reporting in the startup, then if you get another BSOD, you'll see what the code is for it.

There's a fair chance that getting one that early in your ownership of it was down to software/av/registry/hardware conflicts as you added your progs and connected your devices.......If that's the case, once it's sorted, it's unlikely to happen again.

If it does though, the BSOD start up code will tell you if it's a hardware problem or something else.


I'd also run a decent memory diagnostic prog right now, which will tell you if you have a dodgy RAM chip

Not going to try and fix it, get a new one tomorrow...

If I had it for a few months I would.

I think I will try the same thing again, need to go back to digs to get bow so will exchange tomorrow.

If the new replacement machine asks to update, go to control panel, look at the updates and deselect all then manually select only one at a time and allow to execute.

This allows the machine to update, install and reboot between each update file, rather than trying to perform multiple updates at the same time which may conflict and cause instability or system lockups and crashes. It may take a while to update but should avoid BSOD.

Got another ASUS as it was by far the best spec. Almost spent an extra 100€ for an HP but it did not meet the spec even with extra dosh. Installed all I need and working fine, but so far have windows updates switched off. Tomorrow I will start downloading them and installing which ones I want bit by bit.... Not virtually
