Break failure!!!

The break pads are new and there is no heat coming from the breaks. The speedo works fine and during this issue it has always worked. That's another reason why I'm puzzled about this problem.

Second hand about £25 on eBay but no way to know if they are any good. £80(ish) new.

To fit remove rear wheel. Remove torx head screw holding the sensor, remove clips holding the cable and unplug. Fit the new sensor with a new O ring and refit the clips put wheel back.

Don't waste your money & time on a ABS sensor. I did. Accept the fact the abs module is playing up, replace it,fix it or live with it.

You could replace a few bits trying to fix the problem and end up around the cost of an ABS refurb......... and still find out you needed an ABS refurb all along!!

Why would I do that if on the previous trip to dealership didn't require a new ABS module? The bike has just been serviced and during the service they've run the diagnostic tests and didn't advise on any problem with the ABS module. One would think that at the price they cost £££££££££ that would be their "first port of call", no?
They mentioned a possible fault with the battery but it seemed to be charging. But at no time did the diagnostic test or the errors it displayed suggested a new ABS module. So I am not going down that road staright away without exploring other possibilities first.

I think the point I am trying to make is that 9 times out of 10 when the brake failure light starts coming on with these Hexheads, the ABS unit is the culprit. I had exactly the same symptons as you recently, I decided to grasp the nettle and send my ABS unit to the UK to be refurbed..........hey presto.......problem solved.

Sorry I have re read the thread but can't see what age your bike is. There are different types of abs on these bikes so it might be pertinent. I apologise in advance for my blindness if you have said but I really can't find it ;-/

Your abs ring is moving away from the pickup sensor.

When I had the light coming on intermittently - some times after a long time, sometimes quickly. I found the front abs ring had a small dent - the gs911 error was something like "ABS Implausable Error" or some such.

I removed the ring and found the dent by examining the gap between the ring and some glass. A small punch and quietly worked the dent out.

I've never had the fault come back.

No worries, its a 2013 GSA. The thing that's buggering me is that the light comes one after 20 or 30 min of fast riding then when I stop, switch off and switch on again the light has gone but will come back again as I explained above. There's no intermitent light on, there's no speedo issue! They light comes on and I notice that the abs don't work. But why doesn't it come on the errors with the GS911 at the dealership I don't understand!

Yep,
Thought this was going to be a thread about running out of ginger nuts.

It happens to my 2011 GSA too: every now and then the brake failure light comes on but on a restart it all goes out, it has happened at motorway speeds, but not only then so I don't think its related to overheating in the FD. When the light is on the speedo keeps working, nevertheless the GS911 said there was a fault (cant recall number) but its said something like "implausible signal from rear speedo sensor" so I am pretty sure its that as I have already replaced it once with a 2nd hand one from motoworks. (when the rear speedo sensor failed last time the warning was continuously on and the speedo wouldn't work for the first few miles after which time I think it starts using input from the front sensor). When it happens more times than not I will replace the sensor.

What faults did the BMW dealer say was showing?

I'm having the "brake failure" light on problem. At first it was a bit iffy whether is went off or not then it stayed on permanently
and still is. The speedo doesn't work for about a mile and half then chimes in. Your post gave me a heads up as to what's going on
so i did a check. I disconnected the rear sensor and drove the bike. The speedo worked immediately so it was using the front sensor.
I reconnected the sensor and the speedo did the "wait a bit" thing before coming on. Next thing i did was disconnected the sensor again
turned the ignition on and spun the front wheel and the speedo worked. What seems to be the thing is that if the electronics detect a sensor
but isn't getting the right data from it it will wait a bit then switch to the front sensor. If it doesn't detect anything it will switch immediately
to the front sensor.

I'm now more confident it's the sensor at fault rather than the ABS unit.
