Just out of interest ............what's the cost of buying a spare EWS and FPC ?

Ditto

Im doing a 5000 mile ride on my new GSA in March 09. Perhaps it would pay me to take these as Im gonna be along way from a dealer

Hi,

I'm curious '10 mins to change the Ring Antena'?

I've had a looked at the maunal on changing this and it indicates removing the handlebars, forkbridge etc.

Is there a quickway?

Yes - it's a get you on your way repair. To Replace will of course take longer - which is what you're talking about.

I can't remember the price but would guess about £60 each? One hundred and twenty quid's a lot of money (cue all the usual: It's a disgrace, It's a round-the-world bike, Should have bought an 1150 type comments) but worth every penny if it keeps you going on your holiday.

Money well spent. :thumb2

You can always flog them on here to recover most of your outlay, when you have no more need of them.

I broke down last week - FPC. The tech who fixed the bike, had a bag of them in his car. He did say that dealers will now sell them on sale-or-return basis if you're going on a trip. It is piss poor nontheless. I had my first FPC failure on an 04 bike, and four years later I'm still having the same problem.

At least they had me on the road again in less than an hour this time.

Put yer money where yer mouth is Jay ...

YEs Windychuffer I agree totally BUT I don't build the bikes and I don't assure the quality and I most certainly wouldn't want to wait around for 4 hours (when 10 minutes could get me mobile!) while someone comes to tow away my pride and joy and wreck it!

There has been so much hype everywhere about these items failing would it not seem prudent to you to carry them??? (Edit and the tools and required method to fit them??)

Do a Steptoe and put a "How to" c/w photos on the Technical forum.

I would do but I don't have a 1200:aidan:aidan:aidan

Cos I used to be a BMW technician :( and I still fix them for a hobby :aidan:aidan:aidan

Besides wouldn't you rather have someone "suggest!" carrying a couple of spares rather than the possibility of a session freezin somenight when 10 minutes could get ya going????

By the way Gipsy your 800 shares components with the 1200 :eek::eek:

Did you ever have a breakdown with the 1200?

Have Nice Day!

....but that bit of self-help takes away all the fun of ranting and complaining, doesn't it....

...As you can see, people would rather not help themselves the easy way. They would much rather do it the hard way. It's their way to get back at BuMW for selling them the piece of tat in the first place...

Did a little mod for you Wapping - you were being just too diplomatic: (for once) :D :D

Just to point out that Elvie my wife has the 658, and I have a 54 plate 1200, and yes it has suffered a few breakdowns, which is why my 4th FPC is in my top box, together with a spare ring antenna, and all the tools needed to replace them. I also carry a comprehensive toolkit, just in case. I was simply trying to make the point that the message about carrying spares may be better received from a fellow 1200 owner, rather that an 11__ owner, many of whom seem to regard the 1200 series in a less than favourable light.

NO worries Gipsy, please just don't tar me with the "11-- are better than" brush!

I love all the BM's and I can genuinely say i was the only "Enthusiast" at the dealership (i.e. Bikes in the blood and a passion about them) Rather than just extorting money from them and the punters!

However I am very deeply saddened by the penny penching of a great marque on a great bike which has caused such an uproar within the motorcycling community

All this negative publicity must have cost them sales?
In as much as Backing Ewan and Charlie made the GS a worldwide Icon and increased sales tenfold!

I don't have any favourites, I'd love a 1200 but the bottom line is I can't afford one! I make do with my "GR" Sort of a GS RS mish~mash affectioinately named the "Grrrrrr"

Rest assured that I would have the required bits with me all the time if I had a 1200 (I already have changed a few of them)

P.S. Pardon the error in bike identity I only read a little of your blog and spotted the F series

No problem at all. I love my BM despite it's faults, and if I was taller and stronger would swop for an 1150 GSA! I think negotiating the FPC and Ring Antenna as part of the purchase is a superb way of summing up the situation. Good riding:beerjug:
