Absolutely spot on, they truly are not fit for purpose and I have absolutely no confidence in them

I agree that if they're leaking then they're not fit for purpose and should be replaced.

That said, mine haven't leaked (yet) and I find that they're great at anything less that 9/10 riding speed when they only just start to fade. That could just mean I need better pads though.

I think it's being blown out of proportion a little bit. Yes, some leak and they shouldn't, but they've all been sorted with no questions asked and (unless I've missed it) there's been zero reports of any actual braking failures with leaking calipers. So they're still doing the job before being replaced, albeit with some leakage.

A lot from people who don't even own the bikes with Hayes brakes, priceless. The fluid if they leak isn't pissing out, its a small drop and its being sorted. Even Brembo callipers have had issues, as posted earlier. I don't understand the god like admiration for Brembo. They are also a mass produced product. Personally I don't care who makes the components on the bike as long as they work. My brakes work fine and the callipers don't leak, but if they do, Mr BMW will sort for me, so all good :)

I think that a good bit of the angst about the Hayes callipers is

BMW moved away from Brembo which in the main is a tried, tested and trusted product. not without problems but on the whole a very good unit for stopping ones awesome steed.

Now i would suggest that BMW moved to Hayes as they are cheaper and cut production costs and therefore increase their profits. Just as they did with the spoked wheels and probably many other parts that have not yet been shown to fail. The Hayes callipers are clearly more prone to failure than the Brembos

A race to the bottom on quality in the quest to increase profits.

Whilst ever the buying public put up with this constant cheapening at no benefit to them then BMW will keep on doing it

All businesses look at their costs and cut them where possible to increase profits - it shouldn't be a surprise.

The fact that there have been a few reports of leaking calipers (no accidents as a result?) is disappointing but not earth shattering. See earlier post in that Brembo have in the recent past issued recalls due to defective products demonstrates that they're not immune to quality issues. Indeed, even the all hallowed brand of KTM have been issuing recalls too... https://www.ktm.com/globalassets/sa...-my15my16_replacement-refitting-fuel-tank.pdf - like BMW they're sorting the QA issues as appropriate.

Such is life.

Ps, my Hayes calipers are fine too.

i get the feeling that the leaky calipers happen from almost new?

it would be interesting to get a feel for when they started leaking on the bikes that have actually have had issues?

As far as i know some bikes had their calipers changed during the PDI process as they were found to be leaking. Ive seen vids from the States where some were leaking while on the dealership floor. So yes some have leaked as soon as they were fitted to the bike’s

It would appear, from all accounts so far, you should be able to pick up on this issue very quickly while the bike is stationary rather than being 10k miles in and it suddenly developing an issue mid-ride or something.

So for me that just adds to the feeling of overreaction of people personally.

Hopefully Brembos will be standard fit again soon, I will wait a while before upgrading to a 1250.

But why? If it was a new Brembo calliper fitted that was weeping, would that stop you buying until they put a different brand on?

No leaks from my calipers on 1250rt, 3500 miles from new (June 2019), just repaired leaking nearside front brembo caliper on my R1100RT (Leaking from join of caliper half's new o ring cured it) :D

Mine have leaked on two sets and the bike has done a total of 6 miles

Exactly this!

Plus OEM Brembo aren't the same as proper aftermarket units you would buy. People get so hung up on brands it actually makes me laugh.

Just looked up Hayes
They are an American firm manufacturing plant in Taiwan ROC
Hayes Bicycle group Asia

So you haven't ridden it yet. So have no experience of whether the actual braking provided is any good (once you get some non-leaking versions) and BMW have replaced them before you even collect, causing no inconvenience to you at all?

I'm struggling to see why you're quite so irate about it to be honest. If there was an issue once you had it that meant multiple return visits to the dealership or something then it would be different I would say. How many components have potentially been replaced due to quality control before it left the factory? In my mind, because you haven't taken delivery of the bike yet, this is no different than something being sorted before being shipped.
